Nokia Series 60 is a platform for mobile phones that use Symbian OS. It is developed primarily by Nokia.

Series 60 consists of a suite of libraries and standard applications, such as telephony, PIM tools and multimedia players. It is intended to power fully-featured modern phones with large colour screens, which are commonly known as smartphones. Series 60 is currently amongst the leading smartphone platforms in the world. It is licensed by some of the foremost mobile phone manufacturers in the world including Siemens, Samsung, Panasonic, Sendo and Nokia.

The Series 60 Platform is a multivendor standard for smartphones that supports application development in JavaMIDP, C++, and Python. An important feature of Series 60 phones is that they allow new applications to be installed after purchase.

These are a few common features in Series 60:

  • Devices' display resolution is 176 x 208 in current devices. (2nd Edition Feature Pack 3 brings support for larger resolutions)
  • It supports Java (J2ME/MIDP 1.0) + applications and Symbian C++ applications.
  • It is designed to be easy and fast to use.
  • It provides versatile and powerful application framework.

Currently (as of 2005) there are several different versions of the Series 60 platform in the market included in the following devices:

Series 60 Version 0.9, based on Symbian OS 6.1

Series 60 1st Edition (Version 1.2), based on Symbian OS 6.1

Series 60 2nd Edition (Version 2.0), based on Symbian OS 7.0s

Contains new features like J2ME/MIDP 2.0 support and themes

Series 60 2nd Edition Feature Pack 1 (Version 2.1), based on Symbian OS 7.0s

Series 60 2nd Edition Feature Pack 2 (Version 2.6), based on Symbian OS version 8.0a

Symbian 8.x has support for WCDMA (GSM 3G) and cdma2000 networks.

Series 60 2nd Edition Feature Pack 3 (Version 2.8), based on Symbian OS version 8.1a

Series 60 3rd Edition (Version 3.0), based on Symbian OS version 9.1
