Numismatics is the scientific study of certain items sanctioned by custom. Numismatics includes the study of medals, medallions and tokens as well as coins.
Numismatics is an ancient discipline. Julius Caesar is often credited with writing the first book on numismatics. Numismatics can include the study of many different things, such as history, geography, economy, metallurgy, or manufacturing of coins. Numismatics is also often concerned with die varieties in coins. These can include mint-made errors, variations in the dies, or other differences from coin to coin.
