NASA stuff

January 14, 1963 Nasa Facts

I'd be willing to scan just about all of the NASA stuff if it's really only 500 pages or so. Do you want me to send it back when I am done? I was thinking some of the documents might be better OCR'd and converted to wikitext articles, if they are predominantly textual. My scanner can scan up to legal size. For anything larger, I have a hand scanner that scans a path 4 inches wide, can stitch those scans together for larger images. please delete my email address when you are done with it. Pedant 17:54, 2004 Oct 16 (UTC)

pages are in the mail you should recieve them soon. Alkivar 04:18, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)

The package of NASA material has arrived. It appears to have survived the trip well. I haven't opened it yet, will try to start tonight.Pedant 22:34, 2004 Oct 26 (UTC)

I'm stuck for a bit on scanning, the computer the scanner is connected to has had the RAM removed, I'm waiting to get it back from Kingston. They received it on the 22nd of November, so I expect it back in a matter of days. Pedant 07:23, 2004 Nov 29 (UTC)

OK, I have the scanner running, trying to figure out the OCR thing. I uploaded this one file for test purposes. I'd like to convert this kind of thing to wikitext rather than keep them as jpgs, cause they get pretty big. If you know of any resources to help me figure out optical character recognition, I'd be grateful. Pedant 22:12, 2004 Dec 29 (UTC)

all right, I have worked a bit at it,and looks like I'm started. The front page for the archive, at present is at this page on wikisource Pedant 06:55, 2004 Dec 30 (UTC)
EXCELLENT! Alkivar 01:24, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

You been doing any more with those NASA Facts papers? Sorta curious as I havent heard anything in a while. ALKIVAR™ 01:02, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

yes, I have taken a break on that, I'm working on getting a faster scanner, but I will definitely follow through on the whole pile. I'm really busy these days so faster is really gooder... gotta run, let me know when you get back from your break. Pedant 02:18, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
some of this ... seems to be missing, but I don't know why. They've moved a lot of stuff from wikisource to en.wikisource, but some it is missing. I've been real busy, haven't worked on it in like a year? User:Pedant 05:33, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

A quick note to say thanks

I just wanted to drop you a quick note to thank you for your support in my request for adminship. It was certainly a wild ride, and I really appreciate you taking some time out to contribute. ClockworkSoul 16:26, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for your work on the Jew template

I know it's a bit frustrating now, but in the end I think it's going to be vastly improved, and most of the credit goes to you. Jayjg | (Talk) 02:54, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Nice work, and thanks

I, ClockworkSoul, award you this barnstar for your innovation and initiative in the creation of the The Defender of the Wiki Barnstar

I just wanted to thank you for coming up with the idea for the The Defender of the Wiki Barnstar, which evolved into the finest (and in my opinion highest) award that we have here at the 'pedia.

Oh, and by the way (for what it's worth) I like your orange sig and the associate image. It adds a bit of flavor to sometimes bland pages. – ClockworkSoul 14:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Defender of the Wiki Barnstar citation

Kudos on inventing the Defender of the Wiki Barnstar. Since I think defense of Misplaced Pages is extremely important, I've edited the DOTWB page to include their citations and supporting evidence. In fact, the only award I can't find supporting evidence for is... um... yours. Could you link it in when you get the chance? Thanks! Alba 00:45, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I dont have one... I never self award. :)  ALKIVAR 01:07, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your FAC support and for updating the table, looks good! Is it Hardcore dance music you're into or that horrible Hardcore Rap stuff they play on MTV? There's very, VERY few of us hardcore dance music fans in the US :) Zerbey 18:39, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Signature

Thanks for voting in my RfA - but please don't use images in signatures! They are unnecessary server load. See ]. r3m0t June 30, 2005 20:28 (UTC) (reply here)

What are the size restrictions for signatures, anyhow? I've been considering using one myself. —RaD Man (talk) 1 July 2005 01:20 (UTC)
For the record i've had this conversation with the dev's ... the image is on commons, not on the en server. The server load is therefore negligible. Or at least thats the conclusion we came to. As for the other reasons listed, it neither interferes with line height nor blinks... I think you worry too much :)  ALKIVAR 1 July 2005 06:45 (UTC)
Well, I trust the devs. OK then. r3m0t July 1, 2005 07:07 (UTC)

You have been nominated

You have made a positive impact on Misplaced Pages, and I firmly believe sysop privileges would only enhance your contribution abilities. If you do not mind, I have taken it upon myself to nominate you for adminship on this hallowed occassion. Please see Misplaced Pages:Requests_for_adminship/nominate#What_to_do_if_you_are_nominated: should you wish to accept, as there have been some changes to the RFA process as of late. Wikimania 2006

Firstly, enjoy your Wikibreak; come back clear-headed and ready to edit! Second, I noticed you live in New England, and are a DJ (awesome!), and wondered if you've heard of Wikimania 2006, which is happening right here in our fair city of Boston. I know it's a few hours' drive from where you are, but if you could participate in IRC chats, or volunteer to help with Wikimania, we'd really appreciate it. I enjoy working with you, and look forward to seeing you in the future. Happy wikibreak, Mysekurity 02:44, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

P.S. I love the userpage! 02:44, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

I dispute your unsourced assertion that you ever sit on your "lazy ass"! If you expect such controversial claims to remain unchallenged, you should not use such a recognizable sig! No one even has to check your contribs to see that is a deliberately false and misleading statement. I am deeply disappointed in you for attempting to push this unsupported minority POV. Love Don't Copy That Floppy

Funny shit, I wish I still had one of the posters (the one with a swashbuckling floppy) that they sent out to universities during that campaign so I could up it to commons. Also, excellent work on the many aspects of warez (it's refreshing to see well written articles by people who have a clue). Nice userpage, too, 'cept the whole spiel about being conservative ;-P (at least you aren't a GWB fanboy). --Dragon695 18:48, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Image:Alkivar-003-TWEAKED.jpg

I have a question about the above mentioned picture. You state it was taken by Utopium Photography, yet you claim to be the copyright holder. If this picture was not taken by you, but you are the subject the photographer has to release the copyright to you. Just like wedding photos, the married couple do not hold any copyrights, or infact any rights to the photos. Mike (T C) 23:30, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Dude... you have absolutely no idea what the hell your talking about. In the US, works for hire cannot be registered for copyright by the creator. See this pdf:
Under the 1976 Copyright Act as amended (title 17 of the United States Code), a work is protected by copyright from the time it is created in a fixed form. In other words, when a work is written down or otherwise set into tangible form, the copyright immediately becomes the property of the author who created it. Only the author or those deriving their rights from the author can rightfully claim copyright.
Although the general rule is that the person who creates a work is the author of that work, there is an exception to that principle: the copyright law defines a category of works called “works made for hire.” If a work is “made for hire,” the employer, and not the employee, is considered the author. The employer may be a firm, an organization, or an individual.
Note the section in bold. Nuff said.  ALKIVAR 19:27, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Paul Oakenfold

I agree that the way I worded it, it sounded like he mixed his own records. I sat there for a few minutes trying to peice together a sentence that would be both grammatically correct and convey the correct message. "Not only did Oakenfold produce records, but he also mixed them." A few too many modifiers. The words but and also are both redundant but without them the sentence is screwed. Perhaps, "Oakenfold even mixed the records he produced for others" or something of the ilk? drumguy - speak? 02:05, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

By the way, wonderful userpage. Did you develop it or did you copmod a template? drumguy - speak? 02:06, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
I subst'd some of the templates... and modified them to match the theme (the GFDL only and the Userpage templates) the rest I developed by hand. I'd be glad to give you any help you need developing one of your own if you'd like.  ALKIVAR 21:47, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Any chance of some help?

I'm a bit disapointed by my photo of a print, it was under glass, no lighting, so the flash is a problem, I tried to photoshop out as much as I could but I wondered if you had a program that could level out the background white as it gets real grey away from the centre. pretty please? :) --Alf 22:19, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

I did my best to level out the flash, I also corrected the angular distortion so the frame around the sketch looks square now. I also reduced it to greyscale as color needlessly increased the file size for this image. If this is not what you wanted feel free to revert my changes.  ALKIVAR 22:53, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
You run a fast and efficient ship there Alkivar :) I've just been appreciating it high res and zoomed in, that's a great improvement. Thanks. --Alf 23:14, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

I, VegaDark, award you this barnstar for your continued improvement of Misplaced Pages

List of animals in The Simpsons‎

I thought that images were allowable for lists of characters. The page in question is an article that just happens to have "list of" in front of it. None of the characters on that page have their own pages and the images all illustrated what was described in the section. -- Scorpion 23:33, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

The images are used solely to identify the subject, which is against our policy for fair use. See WP:NFCC Entry #8: Significance. Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding. Non-free media files are not used if they can be replaced by text that serves a similar function. emphasis mine hope this clears it up.  ALKIVAR23:58, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
If I removed half of the images, could we keep 5-10 images with rationale? I've seen several FAs with at least five fair use images. If this were agreeable, I would do my best to implement this on all of the Simpsons character pages. Would this be acceptable? -- Scorpion 00:02, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Fight Club

Why did you delete the images without discussion? I don't appreciate your brusque conduct in removing them. —Erik (talkcontrib) - 17:37, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

The images existed under the criteria found in #5 of WP:FU#Acceptable images: "Film and television screen shots: For critical commentary and discussion of the cinema and television." —Erik (talkcontrib) - 17:39, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
And failed WP:NFCC criterion #8.  ALKIVAR18:16, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
How does your judgment call supercede discussion about the appropriateness of fair use rationales for non-free images? Why did you conduct yourself in a unilateral manner rather than initiate discussion or bring the issue to WP:IFD? Your behavior is brusque and unfavorable to actually working with editors in shaping consensus about how non-free images could be better implemented. Please explain your behavior in light of other options. —Erik (talkcontrib) - 18:21, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
I think it would have been more productive to have perhaps first listed these images on WP Films as potential deletes; it would allow the community to have reviewed the situation and perhaps even improved the articles by integrating the images more cohesively and clearly as a part of critical commentary. Girolamo Savonarola 18:45, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Can you please review the non-free images at Sunshine (2007 film) and report if you think the two non-poster images have sufficient fair use rationales? I'd like to get an idea from an admin like you what would be appropriate for inclusion. —Erik (talkcontrib) - 22:39, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Based on context only, the first image is more for a "group photo" than for critical/analyisis use within the article body text. The gold spacesuit image has more validity based on context. The fair use rationales appear to address all 10 items of NFCC so the rationales are good, except for response to item 8. Based on my experience as an admin, the first would fail because it incorrectly states its significance (a picture isnt needed to show that theres a diverse racial mix in the casting). The spacesuit image would survive imo.  ALKIVAR23:40, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
Also, I've added other non-free images that have solid fair use rationales to Fight Club (film). Can you please review them and give me your feedback as to if they are appropriate or not? —Erik (talkcontrib) - 23:36, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
Will take a look at those in a bit.  ALKIVAR23:40, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
OK took a look at the new images in Fight Club (film). All of these appear to have acceptable context, actual analysis of the image, and valid fair use rationales. These would all avoid deletion from me. You may wish to get a second opinion as i'm one of the more lenient admins when it comes to fair use. But as far as I'm concerned those are acceptable.  ALKIVAR00:08, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
Why wouldn't the image be appropriate under #5 of WP:FU#Acceptable images, which says: "Film and television screen shots: For critical commentary and discussion of the cinema and television." The latter is apart from "critical commentary", and there is plenty of context discussing the diversity of the cast in this piece of cinema. How would "discussion of the cinema and television" apply as opposed to the "critical commentary" of a prominent set design or a prominent costume design? —Erik (talkcontrib) - 23:46, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
My opinion is that there is no need to provide a photo to show that there is a racial mix, it adds nothing of value that text cannot and does add potential problems as do all non free content. The gold suit on the other hand adds significant information, because words cannot accurately portray to quote the article "visual influences from science fiction films in space by Andrei Tarkovsky (Solaris in 1972), Stanley Kubrick (2001: A Space Odyssey in 1968), and Ridley Scott (Alien in 1979)." as these sources are very different in visual feel, its harder to picture what is written in textual form. In contrast with the fact that just about everyone by now should know what an asian or indian or brazilian looks like.  ALKIVAR00:08, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Block of G2bambino

Could you explain your block of this user? It appears s/he uploaded several images without source information, but wasn't given the appropriate time to rectify the situation before you blocked him/her. As the template on the images states, a user should be given 7 days or a minimum of 48 hours after being notified. You deleted all the images within hours of them being tagged, then blocked the user without warning. Please reconsider, as I don't believe policy supports this block. - auburnpilot talk 17:43, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Looking at your deletion logs, it seems you are completely ignoring the standard process, deleting dozens of images within hours of being tagged. Please stop, and give editors the appropriate time they are allowed before deleting their uploads. Further, I have reversed your block of G2bambino (talk · contribs) as unjustified. - auburnpilot talk 18:10, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
This is not the first time this user has been admonished for improper image use. Uploaded images w/o copyright license data, several without sources, several without fair use rationales... the block was for repeated violations. See user's talk page, and its archives, you will note several infractions prior.  ALKIVAR18:13, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
I am speechless, and completely disgusted that you have chosen to wheel war over this block. Despicable. - auburnpilot talk 19:34, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
I strongly suggest you unblock ASAP, especially considering your conduct is currently about to go to arbitration. This reblock is completely out of order. Ryan Postlethwaite 19:37, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
I have taken then to AN/I, I strongly suggest you comment at the board. Ryan Postlethwaite 19:43, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:Requests for arbitration/Alkivar

Hello,

An Arbitration case involving you has been opened: Misplaced Pages:Requests for arbitration/Alkivar. Please add any evidence you may wish the Arbitrators to consider to the evidence sub-page, Misplaced Pages:Requests for arbitration/Alkivar/Evidence. You may also contribute to the case on the workshop sub-page, Misplaced Pages:Requests for arbitration/Alkivar/Workshop.

On behalf of the Arbitration Committee, Picaroon (t) 20:59, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

FYI, the evidence page isn't for discussion. You shouldn't edit someone else's section - you should add evidence to your own section. --B 21:17, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
I'm not adding evidence, but I am refuting accuracy of items point by point, it was explained to me that to do it in this manner is acceptable, albeit not common.  ALKIVAR21:21, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
Even if you are refuting the accuracy of the items, you should do it on a separate section or on the talk page. the top of the page clearly states that "Anyone, whether directly involved or not, may add evidence to this page. Create your own section and do not edit in anybody else's section". nat 21:28, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
