The following is a proposed Misplaced Pages policy, guideline, or process. The proposal may still be in development, under discussion, or in the process of gathering consensus for adoption.

This page is a proposal to institute a List of the Day (WP:LOTD) monthly voting process for daily LOTD inclusion on the main page (the main page would either look like this or this). It is also hoped that this process extends to a List of the Year (WP:LOTY) contest among the single best LOTD of each month, which will be dubbed Lists of the Month (WP:LOTM). The process is quite simple:

  1. Featured lists are nominated.
  2. Editors vote on nominees.
  3. The candidates are promoted, renominated or failed.
  4. The promoted candidates are scheduled for the main page.

Any FL (except FLRCs) that has not been a WP:LOTDC or LOTY in the last 12 months may be nominated as a LOTDC for the following month. All nominating users must vote (1st choice-3 points, 2nd-2 pts., 3rd-1 pt.) for three unique articles. Other registered users may also cast three unique votes. Voting runs from the beginning of the month through the twentieth day of the month. The 30 (or 28) top vote getters will be promoted from List of the Day Candidate LOTDC to LOTD. The next 30 will be renominated as LOTDC for the next month. Remaining nominees become failed Lists of the day cadidates, (WP:FLOTDCs), and must wait one year to be eligible for LOTDC status. A 31st exemption will be chosen based on longest tenure on the LOTDC list for 31 day months. Each month's leader, LOTM, will have a link at the bottom of the LOTD section all month. An LOTY will be chosen in a December election of the 12 monthly winners and have a link at the bottom of the LOTD section for the entire year. Similar processes have worked out credibly at Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year Contest and on a smaller scale at WP:CHICAGO's elective process for Category:Top-importance Chicago articles.

The successful LOTDCs will select their own main page dates in the following month’s queue based on their finish in the voting. Date preferences will be awarded. For specific date requests up to 25 characters, such as (24th subject Birthday), (5th War Start), (20th League Championship), & (16th Federal Holiday) are permitted.

Goals

The philosophy is similar to WP:TFA and Wiktionary Featured word candidates. Our goals are as follows

  1. to highlight the best of Wikipedias Lists by featuring them on the Main Page,
  2. to pique editorial interest in wikipedia lists
  3. to nurture people's natural interest in wikipedia as a resource by exposing them to interesting and encyclopedic lists
  4. to help readers improve their knowledge base by exposure to such lists
  5. to select our candidates equitably so that all concerned have a positive wikipedia experience.
Administrator Duties

Administrators will be involved in the following elements of this process

  1. Monitoring formating of nominations
  2. Monitoring eligibility of nominees.
  3. Handle all vote tallying of single line votes in a composite chart.
  4. Police reciprocal voting.
  5. Police canvassing.
  6. Police block voting by groups (especially wikiprojects).
  7. Update log history.
  8. Perform image checks.
  9. perform talk page updates.
  10. perform renomination updates.
