• Estland (English: Estonia); (Estonian: Eesti) is thought to be originating from the Roman historian Tacitus as Aestii were a people he described in his book Germania (ca. 98 CE). Eistland in ancient Scandinavian Sagas and Estia, Hestia and Estonia in early Latin sources is the origin of the modern national name of Estonia.

• Estland is the modern name for Estonia in German, Swedish, Danish, Dutch and some other Germanic languages, with the notable exception of modern English.

• Estland in historical context is sometimes referred to as a dominion of the Baltic German Teutonic Knights, a province of the Danish, the Swedish and the Russian Empires, roughly covering the area of the present day Northern Estonia.

• Dansk Estland (Danish) was a dominion of Denmark in what is now Northern Estonia in 1219-1346, and in Oesel in 1206 and in 1559-1645.
  • Estland was a local administrative area of the Baltic Germans, the Baltic Noble Corporations established during the Middle Ages.
• Swedish Estonia was a dominion of Sweden in 1578-1721 in what is now Northern Estonia.
• Reval Governorate was a guberniya of Russian Empire formed in what had previously been Swedish Estonia, and was later known as Governorate of Estonia (Russian: Эстляндская губерния)in 1796-1918.

• "Estland" is also the name of a phantom island on the Zeno map.
