The story of One Piece follows the adventures of a young pirate named Luffy D. Monkey whose body was turned to rubber after he unknowingly ate a cursed fruit known as the Devils Fruit. The series is very colorful and simultaneously holds a Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland flare.
Because of its colorful characters and intense fights between bizarre characters One Piece has gained a level of popularity near that of Dragonball in Japan. Other Mangas that have recently gotten near that popularity point are Inuyasha and Naruto.
