Rayman Raving Rabbids is a platforming video game for the Nintendo DS. It was released on March 6th, 2007. Unlike the console versions which are trial-based, it (along with the Game Boy Advance version) is a traditional Rayman platform game.
Gameplay
This game has five worlds: Beach, Jungle, Desert, Factory and Ice. The Beach world is more of a tutorial, and the Ice world only has two levels, each one a boss level. Nearly all the levels are set out like this: Get through the platforming part, beat the minigame and finally the ultimate challenge test. The platforming parts are like most other Rayman games, where you have to follow the path, beating enemies and collecting items. Then there are the minigames. there are nine types of minigames, each one making use of the stylus:
Puzzles: Use the stylus to move the pieces of an image around to get the whole picture.
Cards: Touch the cards with the stylus to turn them over and try to find the matching pairs.
Roulette: Stop the wheel at the right time to make the wheel land on the same symbol as the one displayed on the lower screen.
Beat Rabbids: Touch the Rabbids with the stylus before they smile.
Catch Food: Catch food with the stylus and give it to the Rabbids.
Push Back Mines: Touch the mines before they reach the ground.
Avoid Rocks: Collect stars and avoid contact with rocks.
Avoid Crash: Elevate the stylus with the spaceship to keep it from crashing.
Avoid Ghosts: Avoid contact with ghosts.
The final challenge of each level is usually a game where Rayman is running forward of his own accord. Using your costumes of Earth, Fire, Ice and Wind, you must interact with obstacles to help Rayman get through alive. On your way, you must collect all the trophies of that level in one go. There are 100 trophies in the entire game.
Also, there are three Ray Gear challenges in which you must avoid enemies fire and destroy the giant Fish Creature. These are timed, as if you are on the challenge for two long, a counter will start counting down to how long you have left.
After you unlock each costume or the Ray Gear, you must pass a tutorial to get used to its controls.
Characters
Rayman:
Main article: Rayman (character)Rayman is the main character in this game and Ubisoft's mascot. He has been captured by the insane bunnies and must take part in all the Rabbids' challenges so they are entertained. Eventually he collects 100 trophies and gets to fight the Rabbids' ultimate commander: the Rabble Droid! Note that in this game, his in-game model is the same one that was used in Rayman 2: The Great Escape/Rayman DS.
Rabbids Army:
Main article: RabbidThe Rabbids are the antagonists of the game and have captured Rayman. They have put him in a gladiator-styled arena where he must take part in all there challenges in order to face up to the Rabble Droid. They are completely insane and would do literally anything to stop Rayman.
Collossus: He is a giant robot piloted by the Rabbids and is the first boss in the game. He is equipped with Lasers and Homing Rockets.
Rabbid Fish Creature: This is a giant robot fish controlled by the insane bunnies. In order to destroy them all, Rayman must pilot the Ray Gear and destroy the Fish's weak points.
The Rabble Droid: A giant Droid who is also controlled by Rabbids. He is the commander of the Rabbids and is described in the game as the 'ultimate killing machine' At the end of game, you must take control of the Ray Gear and send his shots straight back at him in order to beat him. He is strikingly similar to Sergui from the Wii version of the game and when fighting him, you can sometimes hear him say 'Whoah, momma!'
Rhinophants: These are strange creatures who also appear in the Wii version of the game and are the most common enemies. There method of attack is to touch you.
Types of Rabbids plus allies
Please note that the hit points are for fist shots, not Lum shots
Rhinophants: These guys just slowly jump around and will harm you if you touch them. Hits: 1
Big Rhinophants: These guys are twice as big as the normal ones. Despite being tougher, they are much slower. Hits: 2
Robo-Piranhas: You find these in the water. They just swim around but can harm you if you touch them. Hits: 1
Mini Robo-Piranhas: They may be smaller, but you might find them more annoying. Hits: 3
Bugs: Whenever you go too close to these, they will jump on you. They can't harm you, but they do make you unable to jump. Top get rid of them, just blow into the microphone. Hits: 0
Plunger Gun Bunnies: These guys will try to shoot plungers at you, but they aren't very annoying. Hits: 2
Advanced Plunger Gun Bunnies: These are very annoying. They are similar to the normal Plunger Gun Bunnies except they fire four Plungers at a time and they do it much quicker. Hits: 4
Maid Bunnies: They just dance on the spot like mad, but if you get too close, they will just lob their feather duster at you. Then when it notices it just threw away its only weapon, it will curl up and shake in fear. What's so annoying about them is you don't get any stars for beating them. Hits: 1
Celery-throwing Bunnies: These bunnies are armed with explosive celeries and dangerous! They will try to throw it at you like grenades and they can sometimes be annoying. Hits: 3
Spy Bunnies: They wear Splinter Cell costumes and hide in boxes. You always find them at high platforms because they like to launch plungers downwards. Hits: 2
Spider-Bot Bunnies: You will notice how these robots have plasters on the back of them. Get close to them so it comes running towards you then jump over it. When you land, quickly turn around and shoot the plaster before it turns around to charge at you again. Keep repeating this until it dies. Hits: 8
Jumping Spider-Bot Bunnies: They are just like the normal ones, except this time, you won't be doing the jumping; they will! They they try to squash you flat run towards the spot where it was and quickly turn around to shoot it. Again, keep repeating until it dies. Hits: 8
Collossus: To beat him, you need to create a bomb over the fire symbol (look out for the Rhinophants that come your way, they can be annoying), and throw it at Collossus, who is standing on a slightly higher platform. Collossus will take damage and jump onto one of the higher platforms (left or right) and will launch homing missiles at you. Create another bomb, throw it onto the platform Collossus was on, then, being careful of Collossus's laser shots, throw it at him. If you are not quick enough he will move onto the platform at the other side. If you hit him though he will jump onto his lower platform, and you must quickly get off. Keep repeating this and he will take the door on the higher right platform. Follow him there and you will see an ice symbol. Use it to freeze Collossus and punch him as many times as you can until the ice melts. Collosus will then launch homing missiles at you again. Avoid them and Collossus will come back. Repeat this method (freezing him with ice and avoiding his rockets) until you eventually destroy him. Hits: a full health bar
Rabbid Fish Creature: When you get to him, attach your plunger to the hoop on his tail and winch him in. When he's close enough start shooting at the red points (the weak points). This will work better with rockets. Eventually, whether you destroy one or not, the Fish will detach itself and zoom ahead of you. You need to catch up with him and repeat the method until you stop him. Hits: 3/4
Rabble Droid: You will be in the Ray Gear when fighting him, and yes, this one is is timed like the other Ray Gear challenges. Don't forget he will enemies at you between hits, so it might be helpful to destroy them. First he will launch blue energy balls at you. Touch the Ray Gear eye to put on your shield and deflect these. After destroying his back-up forces, he will soon start launching pink ones at you. These can't be deflected. What you have to do is to shoot at them and they will turn into blue ones. Now you can deflect them, so quickly turn your shield on. Eventually, he will send pink ones at you, but when you shoot and deflect them, they will be going towards the Rabble Droid extremely slow. To speed it up, shoot at it until hits him. Now for the final, and hardest part. He will create fire balls that are slowly heading towards you. Quickly latch onto the Rabble Droid with your plunger, and now you have to reel him in while shooting the fire ball back at him at the same time! Eventually, he will be hit. Just keep repeating the fire ball method until he dies. Hits: a full health bar
Items
Yellow Lums: These are ammo which you can launch at enemies or switches. You use them just like you fist, except these are stronger and go further. You start the game with only 30, but as you collect Golden Lums, your ammo limitation grows higher. They are scattered around the landscape which means if your ammo isn't full, you can always collect some more.
Green Lums: They act as checkpoints. Every time you die you will start again from the last place you collected a Green Lum.
Red Lums: You will find these floating above square-shaped stones. Go up to stone and press the X button to take one of three Red Lums. Half of your health bar will refill. If you have used up all three you won't be able to take another from that stone. Each Red Lum costs you five Yellow Lums.
Purple Lums: These are purple flying rings that you can latch onto once you have obtained the Grapnel ability. When latched onto, you will swing on them which can help you get to other places.
Bag of Lums: You find these usually hidden around in obvious places. They contain five Yellow Lums. Note that when you collect them, they make the same sound as when you collect a Gold Fist in Rayman 2: The Great escape/Rayman Revolution/Rayman DS.
Golden Lums: You will find one of these hidden on every level. They allow you to have more ammo for your Yellow Lums. You can tell when you're very close to one, because you can hear a magic sort of glowing sound. They look like a bunch of Yellow Lums surrounded by a golden glow. Normally, you will find Bags of Lums behind them so that when you're ammo increases you will get the new full ammo. Note that these are not needed to get 100% completion.
Stars: When you kill an enemy, you will earn some stars. Every time you fill up your Star Bar, your health bar will grow bigger.
Trophies: You will find these only on the Challenge tests. In order to beat the Challenge Test, you will need to collect every trophy on it in one go, otherwise the bunnies won't let through. In other words, you need these to move onto the next level. There are 100 of these in the entire game, and when you collect them all, you get to fight the Rabble Droid himself!
Gifts: These are giant present boxes. When collected, they give you new powers. There are seven in the whole game. Sometimes you find them trapped in cages and will need to hit all three switches to free it. The powers it gives you are: Earth, Fire, Ice, Wind, Climbing, swimming and Grapnel.
Ray Gear pieces: In order to build the Ray Gear, you must collect all three Ray Gear pieces. They are all hidden in the Factory world.
Ray Gear: This is a flying machine built by Rayman. It has many equipment such as shields, rockets, missiles and winches. It is used to destroy the Rabbid Fish Creatures and the Rabble Droid.
Earth Costume: This costume is like a Granny costume. In the platforming parts, it used to create a boulder to help you get to higher parts on the level. In the Challenge tests, it is used to destroy blocking crates and move platforms.
Fire Costume: This costume is like a Punk costume. In the platforming parts, it is used to create a bomb to knock down doors. In the Challenge Tests, it is used to destroy chains or burn a bunny!
Ice Costume: This costume is like an Elvis costume. In the platforming parts, it is used to freeze obstactles such as trap wooden bridges and weights. In the challenge tests, it is used to freeze water and enemies.
Wind Costume: This costume is like a Funky costume. In the platforming parts, it is used to turn clouds into platforms for short periods of time. In the Challenge Tests, it is used to wind fans so you can get to higher platforms and move wooden bridges in the right direction.
