The University of Texas at Tyler is located in Tyler, Texas. It has a student body of over 5300, a 17:1 student to faculty ratio, and a sprawling, park-like campus. UT Tyler is part of the University of Texas System.

History

The University of Texas at Tyler was originally founded in 1971 as Tyler State College. It was renamed Texas Eastern College in 1975, then became part of the University of Texas System in 1979. UT Tyler was initally a upper level university, teaching only upper division undergraduate and graduate level classes. In 1997, with the addition of lower division classes, UT Tyler became a full four year university.

Campus

The main campus of UT Tyler covers 204 acres (0.8km²) in the south east corner of Tyler, Texas. In the middle of campus is Harvey Lake. UT Tyler also has branch campuses in Longview, Texas and Palestine, Texas.

Riter Tower

One of the most prominent features of the UT Tyler campus is Riter Tower, an 88 foot carillon featuring 58 bells. The tower was built with a $1.35 million dollar gift from Mr. and Mrs. A.W. "Dub" Riter Jr. It is the largest carillon in Texas, and the 15th largest in the United States.

In addition, UT Tyler is currently constructing two new buildings, the Engineering, Science & Technology building, and The University Health Clinic.

Athletics

UT Tyler has eight athletics programs competing in NCAA Division III competition.
