"The Reluctant Traveller" is the second episode of Open All Hours second season.

Plot

Granville (David Jason) is unexpectedly lucky when the milk woman (Barbara Flynn) asks him for a date. The trouble for him is how to get rid of Arkwright (Ronnie Barker), who has not been out from the shop since 1957, when he underwent an appendectomy. His answer is to have Nurse Gladys Emamnuel (Lynda Baron) to convince Arkwright to go out for a romantic trip.

Arkwright agrees, but is very worried about his money, so he decides to take it away in his secret hiding place (an Oxo tin) and in his beloved money belt. The problem is that he has not used his money belt since his appendix operation and is so old and tight that he cannot fit himself into it, and has to walk bent in pain.

The romantic trip is a disaster. Nurse Gladys expects Arkwright to take her to the Dales or the Lakes or the coast, but he takes her to a hotel just a few hundred yards from his shop, were he can supervise the shop.

Nurse Gladys decides that the trip is over, and they return to find Granville dating the milk woman. Nurse Gladys' rage increases when she finds out that Arkwright was bent because of the money belt and that he has lost its key.

Notes

This is first episode to show the Milk Woman, Granville's true love, played by Barbara Flynn.

Quotes

  • When Arkwright's old suitcase breaks down:
    • Arkwright: Me handle's c-come off now. I've a good mind to take this case back to where I bought it from. Trouble is they were b-bombed out during the war (World War II).
  • When Arkwright cannot find his money belt and gives a description to Granville:
    • Arkwright: It looks like a money belt. It's got this little nick in it where the damn fool surgeon caught it with his scalpel.
    • Granville: You never wore it on the operating table!
    • Arkwright: I had to. They don't let you stay awake.
