This page is only for listing images which are duplicates or otherwise unneeded. For copyright infringements, use Misplaced Pages:Copyright problems. For licensing issues that are not copyright infringements, use Misplaced Pages:Possibly unfree images. For images duplicated at the Commons use the {{NowCommons|Image:newname.ext}} tag instead of listing here, unless there's some reason the version here actually needs to be deleted.

Images that have been listed for more than one week are eligible for deletion if either a consensus to do so has been reached or no objections to deletion have been raised. Such images should be dealt with as soon as possible.

As per the speedy deletion policy, administrators can delete on sight "n image which is a redundant (all bits the same or scaled-down) copy of something else on Misplaced Pages and as long as all inward links have been changed to the image being retained." This does not include visually similar pictures, such as PNG versions of JPEG images. Such images should be listed here instead. For the time being, this also does not include photos copied to Wikimedia Commons.

Deletion guidelines for administrators -- deletion log -- List of empty images

Listing instructions

To list an image on this page, simply add it to the bottom. If it has been replaced by another image, also list that image, in the format "] - obsoleted by ]".

Always inform the uploader that their image is at imminent risk of deletion by adding a message to their talk page. You can use {{subst:idw|File name}} (replace "File name" with the name of the image or media).

If you remove an image from an article, you should list the article from which you removed it, so there can be effective community review of whether or not the image should be deleted. This is necessary because image pages do not remember the articles the images used to be used on.

Add the following message to the top of any image page listed on this page: {{ifd}}, which shows up as:

The purpose of this file is currently being discussed in accordance with Misplaced Pages's image use policy. The outcome of the discussion may result in the file's usage or license being changed, or possibly its deletion.

Please share your thoughts on the matter at this file's entry on the Files for discussion page.

Feel free to edit the file description page, but the page must not be blanked and this notice must not be removed until the discussion is closed.

How to list a file for discussion:
1. Add {{ffd|log=2024 December 28}} to the file description page.
2. Add {{subst:Ffd2|1=Files for discussion|uploader= |reason= }} ~~~~ to add a line to today's FfD.
3. Add {{ffdc|1=Files for discussion|log=2024 December 28}} in the caption on each page in the file links.
4. Please consider notifying the uploader by placing {{subst:ffd notice|1=Files for discussion}} on their talk page(s).

This template should only be used on file pages.

On this page, state the reasons that the image should be deleted. Some people like to use the following abbreviations:

  • AB (absentee uploader) - the uploader has not contributed to Misplaced Pages in a long time, and is probably unavailable to answer questions.
  • CV (copyright violation) - the image might be used in violation of copyright, or else there is no copyright info provided
  • NE (not English) - the image contains text that is not English.
  • NS (no source) - image does not contain source and copyright info; tagged with {{No source}}.
  • OB (obsolete) - the image has been replaced by a better version.
  • OF (out-of-focus) - the image is blurry.
  • OR (orphan) - the image is not used on any pages in Misplaced Pages.
  • UE (unencyclopedic) - the image doesn't seem likely to be useful in an encyclopedia

Please sign any listing or vote you add, by adding this after your comment: ~~~~

Instructions for administrators

General

Before deleting an image, make sure of the following:

  • That the image has been listed on this page for one week or longer
  • That the uploader has been alerted on their talk page to the imminent deletion of their image
  • That no objections to its deletion have been raised, or that a consensus to delete has been reached
  • That the image is not used in any articles (note that "What links here" is not currently reliable)
  • That the image is not currently being processed as a copyright violation

Remember to check the image talk page for relevant comments, too.

If the image is to be kept, copy the discussion to the image talk page, and remove the {{ifd}} tag from the image.

When you've finished processing an image (either delete or keep), remove the listing from this page.

Avoid processing your own nominations.

Images moved to Commons

When deleting an image because it is now at the Wikimedia Commons, make sure the Commons version is totally kosher. Among other things, check that:

  1. all relevant revisions of the image have been pushed to the Commons, not just the most recent one.
  2. the Commons version really is as good as or better than the local one.
  3. the Commons version is really free, and properly tagged.
  4. the Commons version is properly attributed.

  • Image:Barnstarmy.jpg OR, CV. dbenbenn | talk 03:46, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
    • It is not an orphan, it is currently used on two talk pages. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 03:49, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
    • Plus, the image was a screen shot (seen at Image:Barneythedinosaur.jpg). The image was tagged as fair use, so I wish to object to the deletion. I also notified the user who created and uploaded the image up for deletion. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 03:53, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
      • (Thanks for notifying the creator; I forgot that.) Note that modifying a copyrighted image isn't fair use. I'll list the image at WP:CP when it fails to be deleted here. dbenbenn | talk 21:11, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
    • Object to deletion for reasons stated above. Also, the barnstar used in the image is in public domain. Sango123 13:10, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
      • Object also because it is an important part of Misplaced Pages:Barnstar and award proposals. The image is clearly a derivative, and released by the creator through the GFDL. Bratsche 14:27, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
        • Whether you want it (i.e. for awards) has nothing to do with whether it's legal. Superm401 | Talk July 1, 2005 04:52 (UTC)
    • Support. It's true that the picture is used on talk pages. However, the Barney picture is undoubtedly copyrighted so this is an illegal derivative work. Superm401 | Talk 04:29, Jun 25, 2005 (UTC)
      • If that is the case, then the image I mentioned above, Image:Barneythedinosaur.jpg, would have to be deleted too. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 22:41, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
        • Incorrect. The original Barney image was a fair use because it was used to describe the show. The article uses it to help achieve its aim of advancing knowledge about Barney, who is featured in the image. Therefore, the use fits the key fair use criterion of purpose. The image with Barney and the barnstar does nothing to help advance knowledge of Barney and there is no information to supplement it. Remember! As the wise man of the fair use page said, fair use depends on the use, not the work. Superm401 | Talk July 1, 2005 04:52 (UTC)
    • Support. This picture is ALTERED. The purpose of the alteration escapes me. The star on the image is taken elsewhere from this site. Accuracy of an article is an important factor here -- and it is empasised. I have noted a couple of times a number of edits done to articles on my watchlist where a user inserted some of their own "made-up" material into an article. A trait that could be compared to the fictionization of history (like -- there were a lot of Soviet history books back in the '60s that claimed we invaded and annexed Alaska!) Made-up information is discuraged here. Is this picture of Barny holding a Wiki-star any different? DELETE AT ONCE! -- Jason Palpatine 2 July 2005 07:23 (UTC) Talk

        • Should the Crown Copyright laws applie to this. If so, we could use the images. If they are released by government sources, we should use them. Though, in my opinion, they should use a better file name. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 22:39, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
    • Oppose - This is image Crown Copyright. Produced by Rideau Hall. It is available for (and individuals are encouraged) to download. Just like the images of the Governor General on Order of Canada. This official portrait was produced for the people of Canada to have access to an image of their soverign. This image is fair use
      • The use by individuals is not being disputed. What is being contested is that the image cannot be used for commercial purposes which is in conflict with GFDL and the like licenses. If you deem it fair use, please state your reasons on the image description page -- don't simply state "fair use" -- but give your reasons justifying this which is a requirement of a fair use claim. Also, please sign your posts. RedWolf June 28, 2005 04:41 (UTC)

      • Oppose. He has not specified a valid criterion for deletion. What he assumed is irrelevant. He has licensed it under a free license. He has the right to discontinue licensing it to others. However, we still have to right to do whatever we wish with it, including distribute it under a free use license. The lesson is to think before you act. Superm401 | Talk July 4, 2005 01:59 (UTC)

            • I left a note on her page that the images were modified earlier to remove the website watermark, and maybe that could have caused this round on IFD. As for the WP:EL, we should try to find a way to show websites that talk about the Sybian in a non-commerical way. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 23:08, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
              • Ah, well I think the template they put on the image page is pretty clear in which rights it grants so they'll just have to take it as a lesson learned. As for the external links (though I'm not sure why we're discussing them here), I don't really mind commercial external links, I just couldn't find any content "about" sybians that wasn't already in our article in any of the external links. --W(t) 23:11, 2005 Jun 25 (UTC)
                • Trust me, we can find a lot. I can find a lot, but I just need my own PC back, some time and also, a space alone. We can discuss how these machines are used in the porn industry, which porn stars rode the blasted things or try to find a picture of someone on it. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 23:20, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Oppose. This needs to be kept to show that people can't give rights then take them away. If you vote to delete here, I'll port it to Commons as a matter of principle. Superm401 | Talk July 4, 2005 02:07 (UTC)

  • Image:LindaLovelace.jpg -- AB, OB The issue with this image is that, while a link was listed, not only was it to a "free webserver" website, but also the page no longer exists. Another mark against the use of this image is that it was uploaded by User:JillandJack, a suspected sockpuppet of the hard-banned User:DW, who had an apparent history of uploading potential copyvios. (Although this is not an apparent copyvio, I would personally like to play it safe and am in the process of finding a fair use or public domain image for Linda Lovelace.) -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 01:49, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • Image:Leda emst.png I originally marked this GFDL due to my interpretation of the permission wording but have been told that the image copyright owners have refused to license under GFDL or similar and have only given permission for use only on Misplaced Pages. Therefore, this image should be deleted. RedWolf July 4, 2005 02:39 (UTC)
If you're uncertain whether they meant to license it under the GFDL, why don't you just email them again to ask for clarification? Superm401 | Talk July 4, 2005 02:41 (UTC)
The current terms are clearly GFDL-incompatible because they make specific stipulations about linking to them and such. For what it's worth, I can produce a functionally equivalent image with a bit of work. I would license it under public domain/free use. I originally asked permission for this image partly because I was lazy and partly to show that people care about finding EMSTs, but license concerns should override that. Deco 4 July 2005 03:23 (UTC)

I just checked with the webmasters of Focal Point Publications, where I sourced the image. They advised me the image has been released into the public domain. I have tagged the image to conform with wiki policy. Molloy

I concur, I just spoke to the copyright holder on the phone, he confirms he may be subject to profit loss. Molloy
