"Full of Mysterious Promise"

"Full of Mysterious Promise" is the first episode of Open All Hours first season.

Plot

Arkwright (Ronnie Barker) has bought a box full of unlabelled tins, having no idea what their contents are. Always a good business man, he decides to sell them, his strategy being that those tins are "full of mysterious promise". So he puts a sign in the shop window reading "Tinned Surprise. The Original Edible Bingo. Get Your Tickets Here". The tins turn out to contain - among other things - sliced pears but not meaty chunks in gravy as predicted by Arkwright.

Meanwhile, Granville (David Jason) ignores Arkwright's advice about not going near number 87 Lindley Road while he is on his delivery round. But of course he does go there out of curiosity, and the door is answered by a naked woman who drags him into the house. Granville returns to the shop in a state of shock with his clothing and hair in disarray. He is quite upset because he discovered he did not have the experience needed for the situation.

Notes

This episode is the first one to have Lynda Baron playing Nurse Gladys Emmanuel. It has also the first appearance of one of the show's regular customers, Mrs Blewitt (Kathy Staff), always in a negative mood as the guardian of the world's morals.

Quotes

This dialogue occurs when Miss Blewitt has to pay Arkwright:

Arkwright: That'll be 97p,luv; thank you. And don't bother 'bout the 3p, you can owe it me.
Mrs. Blewitt: Oh, right. (exits)
Arkwright: (to Granville) Get that (money) in the till quick! Before she realizes she's been done.
