"A Mattress on Wheels" |
---|
"A Mattress on Wheels" is the second episode of Open All Hours first season.
Plot
Granville (David Jason) is upset because the shop's delivery bicycle is so overloaded that he has an accident on it, possibly with another car, but we do not get to see the crash. When he asks Arkwright (Ronnie Barker) to buy a van, the shop's owner does not want to talk about it, but when Granville suggests that a van (with a mattress inside) could be a good idea to seduce Nurse Gladys Emmanuel (Lynda Baron), Arkwright starts to consider it.
Arkwright begins looking for a second hand van, without luck, since he does not want to pay too much.(One van was offered to him for £655, but Arkwright was only willing to pay £120.) In the end, he agrees with the second hand car salesman to let him try the van for one night, just the time that Arkwright needs to take the Nurse out on a date. The evening turns out to be disastrous, since the van is so cramped inside that they cannot get comfortable.
Notes
This episode is the first one to indicate that Granville's father (unknown, since his deceased mother was allegedly - according to her brother Arkwright - highly promiscuous) could be Hungarian. From then, Granville continually fantasizes about his Hungarian origins.
