The term contrasts with the official name of the Israel Defense Forces, which they regard as deeply misleading. It has become standard terminology for the Palestinian Authority's International Press Center and the Palestinian Center for Human Rights. Ben Mor of Haifa University cites it as an example of reframing discussion of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Norman Finkelstein recommends against using the term, saying it makes one appear to be propagandizing.

Quote: "It is the IDF, and it's also illegally occupying Gaza, it's illegally invading them. But don't use terminology which is going to make it seem as if you're a propagandist. Use the terminology that everybody else uses. You should insist on But I would not use 'IOF.' It's 'IDF.' We don't have to become propagandists because we could just use the mainstream and still succeed."
