The Sumerian language of ancient Sumer became extinct and was forgotten until the 19th century. It doesn't have any known links to other languages. This distinguishes it from other languages of the area such as Egyptian language, Hebrew, Akkadian language and Assyrian language (of Assyria) which are all Semitic languages or related to Semitic.

Sumerian was the first language to be written with cuneiform, which was later also used for Akkadian and Assyrian.
