The Aces of the Deep were the top ten German U-Boat commanders during WWII, based on the tonnage of merchant ships they sunk. The currently accepted list is as follows:

#1: Otto Kretschmer (1912-1998)

Also known as "Silent Otto" for his talents for eluding allied Warships.

Sunk 40 merchant ships, for a total of 256,684 tons

#2: Wolfgang Lüth (1913-1945)

Sunk 46 merchant ships, for a total of 225,204 tons.

#3: Erich Topp (1914-)

Served as an advisor for the U-Boat simulation Silent Hunter II.

Sunk 34 merchant ships for a total of 197,233 tons.

#4: Heinrich Liebe (1908-1997)

Sunk 34 merchant ships for a total of 187,267 tons.

#5: Victor Schütze (1906-1950)

Sunk 35 merchant ships for a total of 180,073 tons.

#6: Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock (1911-1986)

One of his patrols was Documented in the novel and film Das Boot with his boat, U-96.

Sunk 24 merchant ships for a total of 170,237 tons.

#7: Karl-Friedrich Merten (1905-1993)

Sunk 27 merchant ships for a total of 170,151 tons.

#8: Herbert Schultze (1909-1987)

Was the most well known commander to the Allied forces during the war.

Sunk 26 merchant ships for a total of 169,709 tons.

#9: Günther Prien (1908-1941)

Became a national hero after he infiltrated Scapa Flow and sunk the British battleship HMS Royal Oak.

Sunk 30 merchant ships for a total of 162,768 tons.

#10: Georg Lassen (1915-)

Sunk 26 ships for a total of 156,082.
