It was written by Peter Cetera and released as a single in July, 1976. It topped the US charts on October 23 the same year and stayed there for two weeks, making it the very first number one hit for the group. That song was also Chicago's biggest hit worldwide after topping the charts in other countries such as Britain and Australia. It also bears the distinction of being the only Chicago single with acoustic guitars as its accompaniment and the only one to win a Grammy.
