But in this context I had meant "vocalise", which is a classical music term meaning singing without words. I doubt that Gould's singing would merit the term "vocalese"--to me it sounds more like grunting than jazz!
So I propose that the text should read simply "the sound of his voice", which is what I put in the current rendering.
