Spider-Man 3 is the third movie in the Spider-Man series and is planned for an American release on May 4, 2007. The movie will be directed by Sam Raimi. Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, J.K. Simmons, Dylan Baker, and James Franco are the confirmed returning cast members from the previous two Spider-Man movies.
It was officialy announced that the filming for Spider-Man 3 starts on January 2, 2006.
New Actors
It has been confirmed that the actor Thomas Haden Church will be playing the main villain. Actor Topher Grace, known for his lead role in sitcom That '70s Show, has joined the cast, although his role is unknown at this time.
Possible Villains and Storylines
Thomas Haden Church
Internet speculation as to Church's role has generally been that he will play Sandman, Chameleon, or (often cited as less likely) Venom.
James Franco
Franco's character, Harry Osborn, is expected to be the second Green Goblin or possibly be the Hobgoblin in order to avoid the appearance of repeating villains. Harry Osborn becomes the Green Goblin in most comic book adaptions which he is featured, although he was the Hobgoblin in one Ultimate Spider-Man adaption. The first Green Goblin, played by Willem Dafoe, was the villain in the first movie and was also the father of Franco's character. Raimi has stated that this movie will stray the most from the comic books and has hinted at the possibility that Franco may not become a supervillain at all.
Dylan Baker
The Lizard was once considered the most likely option due the actor Dylan Baker being cast as Dr. Curt Connors (who becomes the Lizard in the Spider-Man comics) in Spider-Man 2. The Lizard has probably been dropped as a supervillain considering Baker was not immediately signed to this film when other new actors were being sought out and signed. There is also speculation that another sympathetic "mad scientist" villain in the third movie would seem repetitive to the movie goers who have seen the second movie. However, Avi Arad, CEO of Marvel Comics, confirmed in June 2005 that Baker is signed to this movie.
Topher Grace
Raimi has stated that Topher Grace will play "a complex role" which will contrast with the comedic, wholesome, or good-natured roles he's most known for playing. Grace's role in the movie is unclear, but despite secondary and tertiary paraphrased news releases, neither Sony nor Raimi has ever officially confirmed that Grace will play a supervillain. Grace is rumored the most to play either Ned Leeds, Mysterio, Electro, a friend of Peter Parker, or a potential competition for Peter Parker as a love interest to Kirsten Dunst's character, Mary Jane Watson.
New rumours have surfaced that Topher Grace will be playing Ben Reilly, Peter Parker's clone from the notorious clone saga. Although contreversial, this will allow Tobey Maguire to retire the character in honour with Topher Grace donning the spider-man costume. Although this would lead to fan outcry as the clone saga is regarded as one of the darkest moments in spider-man history. Others suggest that it is not possible, that even though Topher Grace looks similar to Tobey Maguire, a clone is a copy of a person and Topher Grace would not be accepted by an audience as a clone of Tobey Maguire. if the clone saga is true it is not known whether Topher Grace will sport blond hair and the more brutal looking spiderman suit as shown in the comics.
Other
Sam Raimi did happen to let slip, in an interview with Wizard, that there will be more than one villian, so Sandman, Lizard, Green Goblin, or even a Sinister Six, could all be possible. Raimi also let slip that the villain would involve massive CGI, furthering the possibility that Sandman or Venom will be involved.
Raimi admitted that Black Cat was removed from early drafts of Spider-Man 2 script. Raimi had expressed some interest in using her character, but he has not confirmed if she will finally appear in this sequel. The actress Chloë Sevigny however has claimed that she tried out for a new role as a "blond buxom" for this movie, which many fans assumed to be the Black Cat or possibly Gwen Stacy, Parker's first true love in the comics. There is speculation she made these claims to draw attention to herself, which other actresses have done in the past. Sony has neither officially acknowledged or denied Sevigny's claim.
Recent rumors have said that Church and Grace will both be playing the same villain, the Chameleon (Church) becoming younger (Grace) in order to woo Mary Jane.
Movie score
Composer Danny Elfman has confirmed that he will not be back for the third installment of Spider-Man and instead he will be working on the movie Charlotte's Web. Columbia Pictures (Sony Pictures) and director Sam Raimi have not yet announced who will score the film.
