The Colbert Report (or possibly Colbert Réport) is a television program announced by Comedy Central that will star Stephen Colbert, currently best-known as a correspondent for The Daily Show. The series will likely begin airing by October 2005. It is said to be a comedic counterpart to media pundit programs such as The O'Reilly Factor and Hannity and Colmes.
Its title was developed from a segment that has aired a few times on The Daily Show. Scheduling is unclear as of April 2005, but it will likely air following TDS at 11:30 PM (Eastern/Pacific). Comedy Central stated that the timeslot may be shared or alternated with the new Too Late with Adam Carolla, which will add humor about the pop culture events of the day. Both series are expected to air four nights each week.
Comedy Central announced that it is part of a line up where they hope to "Keep the viewers attracted by The Daily Show to keep watching late into the night." Colbert, Jon Stewart, and Ben Karlin (The Daily Show's executive producer) supposedly came up with the idea for the show after watching coverage of the sexual harrasment lawsuit filed against Bill O'Reilly. The letter "t" in both "Colbert" and "Report" in the title of the program is silent, because, as Colbert explains, "it's French, bitch!" One segment of the show, called "Worthy Opponent", will feature Colbert debating himself.
