The Republic of Slovenia was briefly a constituent republic of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from March 8, 1990 to 1991. In 1990, Slovenia abandoned its communist infrastructure and held democratic elections in which Milan Kučan, the former Communist representative of the Republic, was elected President. During this time period, Slovenia retained its communist-era flag, coat of arms, and other symbols as it awaited the creation of new symbols that would eventually come after independence.
