As of the 2000 census, the population of the city was 554,636. It is the county seat of Denver County. The CMSA population of 2,417,908 (1999 estimate) makes it the 19th-largest metro area in the United States.
Nickname: The Mile-High City, because its elevation is roughly 5,280 feet (1 mile) above sea level. (The elevation is 1655.4 m (5431 ft.), as surveyed at the Denver International Airport). There is a step outside capital building engraved with a mile high marker.
