He is a main character in the original Resident Evil and Resident Evil Code: Veronica and has also appeared in the various comic book adaptations and novelizations of the games.
Appearances
Chris first appeared as the main male hero in the original Resident Evil. As a result, Chris is the character most often associated with the original Resident Evil. Despite his stronger physique, Chris' version of the game is a lot harder than Jill's due to his lower item capacity (six instead of eight) and the omission of items such as the Grenade Launcher and the lockpick. The game is also very linear as a result. It is often recommended for new players to play the game with Jill first before trying it with Chris.
Despite his omission in the main Resident Evil 2 game, he was featured as an unlockable character in the Extreme Battle mode, first introduced with the Dual Shock Version of the game and later carried over to all subsequent ports (excluding the Nintendo 64 version).
Chris later made a proper return as a main character in Resident Evil Code: Veronica, where he takes over the second half of the game for his sister, Claire Redfield.
In the live-action sequences of the original game, he was portrayed by an unknown actor credited as "Charlie". In Resident Evil Code: Veronica, his voice was provided by Michael Filipowich. In the 2002 remake of Resident Evil, he was voiced by Joe Whyte.

Story
A member of STARS Alpha Team. An ace marksman and airman, he previously served as an Air Force pilot, but was reportedly discharged for insubordination after saving a comrade's life against his superior's orders. He was recruited by STARS through after being recommended by his friend, Barry Burton.
In July, 1998, Alpha Team was deployed to Racoon Forest to investigate the disappearance of Bravo Team. In their search of the area, Alpha Team discovered Bravo Team's helicopter and the remains of their pilot. Shortly afterwards, the team was attacked by zombie dogs. After witnessing the death of fellow member Joseph Frost, Alpha Team was abandoned by their pilot and the remaining members fled into a nearby mansion.
Upon further investigation of the residence, Chris and the others discovered that the entire mansion was infested with undead beings and mutants. Moreover, the team also discovered the remains of their Bravo Team compatriots. Chris met with the sole survivor of Bravo Team, a medic named Rebecca Chambers. With her help, Chris managed to overcome some of the tougher obstacles in the mansion.
Together, they discovered that the mansion was actually a front for a top-secret facility owned by Umbrella that has been harvesting secret "Bio-Organic Weapons" developed from the T-Virus. In addition, their team's captain, Albert Wesker, intentionally led STARS to the mansion in order to test the BOW's performances. However, it seemed that Wesker was taken out by his own creation, the Tyrant, who went after Chris. After defeating the Tyrant, Rebecca activated the self-destruct system and the two escaped along with fellow survivors, Jill and Barry.
After returning to the RPD, Chris and the remainder of STARS requested a full-scale investigation of Umbrella's activities. But his request was denied by the chief of Police, Brian Irons, and very few people believed their unlikely story. Without any other alternatives left, Chris and the others travelled to Europe to investigate Umbrella's main HQ.
Chris would remain underground until December 1998, when he received an e-mail from Anti-Umbrella supporter Leon, informing him about his sister's captivity in Rockfort Island. Upon his arrival on the island, Chris met with the prison's warden, Rodrigo, who knew of Claire's whereabouts. He was shortly killed after being swallowed by a giant worm. Chris also met with his former commander, Wesker, who was surprisingly alive and well despite his apparent death during the mansion fiasco. Wesker now held a grudge against Chris for foiling his plans during that time.
After narrowly surviving his encounter with Wesker, Chris managed to be reunited with his sister. Together, they confronted and defeated the true head of the Ashford clan, Alexia Ashford. The Redfield siblings escaped from the island through a jet, but not before Chris recieved one last visit from Wesker. Going at each other during the debree, Wesker using his immense strength, and Chris his sheer tenacity, the two were at a deadlock. Realizing neither had time to finish their confrontation, they both went to their own escape routes respectively. Not before both, however, have vowed to defeat one another, solidifying their rivalry.
Afterwards, Chris continued his Anti-Umbrella activities until Umbrella's shutdown by the Goverment. It is unknown what he has done since then, although many fans feel that the fierce rivalry between Chris and Wesker is just begging to be resolved at a future time.
Although the Zombie/Umbrella storyline seems to have ended, with Resident Evil 4 beginning a whole new storyline, this still holds true.
Wardrobe
In the original Resident Evil, Chris wore a standard STARS uniform consisting of grey pants, a green vest and a white t-shirt. His alternate costume was a casual outfit featuring a brown bomber jacket with a "Made in Heaven" design on the back. In the Saturn version, he wears an unlockable outfit resembling his standard STARS uniform except for being completely black. In Resident Evil: Director's Cut, his standard outfit in the game's arrange mode is a plain grey t-shirt with shoulder pads and a gun holster.
In Resident Evil 2, he still wears his standard STARS outfit from the first game, but with subtle modifications such as a "Made in Heaven" design on the back. In Resident Evil Code: Veronica, he wears an olive green outfit with a black STARS vest.
In the Resident Evil remake, his Code: Veronica outfit is unlockable along with an original outfit resembling Jerry Welbach's (Brad Pitt) attire in The Mexican.
