Significant events:
- first artificial satellite (USSR)
- first manned spaceflight (USSR)
- first orbital flight (USSR)
- first dual flight (USSR)
- first woman in space (USSR)
- first flight with two people (USSR)
- first connection in space between two craft (USA)
- first spacewalk (USSR)
- first spacecraft on moon (USSR)
- first orbital flight of moon (USA)
- first human landing on moon (USA)
The Soviets beat the Americans in several firsts, but did not manage to beat them to the moon. Technology and especially aerospace technology advanced greatly during this period.
