He has won the US Open, the American Open, Corus B, and the National Open. He was the coach of the US junior national chess team. Raised as a farmhand, he had to make the choice at the age of 16 of whether he wanted to remain with his sister or fulfill his destiny. He is the author of more than thirty-five books. He has given lessons to many top players of the game; his former students including American Grandmaster Jesse Krai and Italian chess prodigy Fabiano Curuana. Silman has said it is ironic that Fabiano is now a better player than he is.
