Jessica graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1996, received her master's degree in Women's and Gender Studies from Rutgers University and has blogged for NARAL Pro-Choice America , Planned Parenthood, and worked as a freelance contributor for Ms. magazine. Her work has been featured in The Guardian, The Nation, TPMCafe, Guernica Magazine, and Alternet.
Jessica is the author of Full Frontal Feminism: A Young Woman's Guide to Why Feminism Matters, which was released in spring 2007., and He's a Stud, She's a Slut...and 49 Other Double Standards Every Woman Should Know.
Valenti came to national attention in September 2006, when law professor Ann Althouse commented on her blog about a photo taken after a meeting between former President Bill Clinton, Valenti and other bloggers, in which Valenti was wearing a tight-fitting top and standing at an angle in front of Clinton. Althouse intimated that it seemed that Valenti was using her breasts to get attention . This set off a slight internet blogger kerfuffle and raised Valenti's profile among bloggers.
Activities
Jessica is the editor of Beijing Betrayed, a global monitoring report on women's progress worldwide and a contributing author to We Don't Need Another Wave and Single State of the Union (Seal Press). She wrote as a freelancer for Ms. magazine, Salon, The Guardian (UK), The Nation, Alternet, The Scholar & Feminist and Guernica.
Valenti was named one of Elle magazine's "IntEllegentsia" in April 2007. Her first book, Full Frontal Feminism: A Young Woman's Guide to Why Feminism Matters, was published by Seal Press. She appeared on The Colbert Report on June 5, 2007 to promote her book.
In her interview with Salon.com, Valenti discussed her style of writing and activism, by suggesting that feminists have been slow to adapt their message to a changing culture.
