How to archive a talk page
Discussion on Misplaced Pages should always be civil. Follow that here, as well as my talk page guidelines.

Welcome to my talk page. The general guidelines I follow on this page are outlined below.

  • I welcome discussion here on Misplaced Pages related matters, but please refrain if you wish to contact me on other matters.
  • Sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~)
  • Be civil. I will be correspondingly polite.
  • If you add personal attacks or vandalism to this page, it will be reverted.
  • I am often busy in real life, and will not necessarily reply to messages with alacrity. Keep this in mind.
  • I will respond on your talk page unless you specify that you want a response here, which I will oblige.
  • If you are here to request my aid as an administrator, then please provide a thorough explanation of what you want done and why. If I am not available, then I would recommend one of the many pages where you can report such tasks for administrators to take care of the problem (i.e. WP:AIV for vandalism, WP:RFP for protection).
  • I will archive every thirty topics. Please do not respond on archived discussions. If you wish to continue a conversation, start a new discussion on this page.

And that's it. Happy editing!

Feature: Writing the Reception

In many video game articles, the Reception section is the last main section of prose. As its name suggests, within the section you should summarize the critical reaction to the game. The section should provide a high-level overview of what the critics liked and didn’t like about the game; it is a summary, not a repetition of what publications thought. Therefore, don’t put in excessive, long winded quotes or have a paragraph detailing IGN’s thoughts on the game. To prevent cluttering of the prose with scores, reviews table such as {{VG Reviews}} can be used to organize this kind of information.

A good way to lead off the section is a by-the-numbers or at a glance snapshot of the game’s reception; you can use aggregate scores to suggest an overall critical response to the game, and can provide sales figures (if you have them) for the game’s release. Commonly, the rest of the reception is broken into positive and negative paragraphs. Entirely separate ‘Praise’ and ‘Controversy’ or ‘Negative comments’ or the like are strongly discouraged as troll magnets. If the game has won any awards, then listing them at the bottom of the reception section is an option.

Other things to remember:

  • Don’t list every single review in the reviews table; likewise, don’t mention every award the game has ever gotten.
  • Generally, talk about what the reviewers say rather than speaking for them; for example, “Reviewer X of Publication Y took issue with elements of the game such as X, Y, and Z” instead of “Review X said that “I took issue with elements of the game such as X, Y, and Z.” If a reviewer has a good comment which sums up the positive/negative/overall reaction, or a particular sentiment common in many reviews, it might be more appropriate to use.
  • If adding sales data, make sure to provide context; did it sell those 4.2 million units within three months of release or three years? If possible, break down the sales by region; did the Japanese like the game, but Americans not buy it?
  • Use reviews whose scores are outliers from the average ratings to find key points that were liked or disliked about a game. If all reviews except for one average around a 9 out of 10, and the one is a 7 out of 10, there is probably some clear negative points to be found in it; the same works with very positive reviews.
  • Perhaps most importantly, give proper weight and keep a neutral point of view. If the game received mostly negative scores, having three paragraphs on positive aspects and glossing over the bad parts in a sentence or two conveys the wrong impression to readers.

Please restore

Please restore the ((totallydisputed)) tag to Conversion therapy, those are not supposed to be removed until the dispute is resolved. Whistling42 (talk) 12:33, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Please don't restore the ((totallydisputed)) tag. There is no real (off Misplaced Pages) dispute about the issue. Skoojal (talk) 01:21, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Edit War on Conversion Therapy talk page

Whistling42 appears to be edit warring on the conversion therapy talk page, in order to represent me as saying something that I did not say (eg, that I used the word 'they' to refer to this editor). I do not accept Whistling42's editing of my comments. Could you please suggest to Whistling42 that this is not appropriate? Skoojal (talk) 02:26, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Sephiroth, I offered Whistling42 a compromise yesterday, but there has been no response so far. Since the conversion therapy talk page cannot remain protected forever, I suggest that if Whistling42 does not reply within the next couple of days, it be unprotected. If this dispute arises again, you can of course decide for yourself how to deal with it. Skoojal (talk) 08:39, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Dragon Ball Z Butchering

Hey, I noticed you were one of the administrators for the Dragon Ball WikiProject, and I wanted to inform you that there have been a few individuals going around deleting information on the subject. They've completely remove the Dragon Ball Z article - leaving only three paragraphs describing it on the Dragon Ball manga page. The saga summaries have also been removed. (And as the WikiProject page states, there were to be four pages dedicated to the story arcs in Dragon Ball Z.)

Vandalism is a strong word, but this hits pretty darn close. A user by the name of Collectonian seems to be taking the lead among them. It's pretty clear given the negative backlash that these changes were not warranted, despite how the users in question attempt to justify them. Anyway, I can try to tackle repairs myself, but my expertise on editing Misplaced Pages articles is somewhat limited. Any help you can provide in fixing the damage and preventing these users from causing more is greatly appreciated! Thanks.72.160.93.25 (talk) 22:38, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

User:Lajolla2009

I'm having issues with User:Lajolla2009. I disagreed with their edits to David K. Jordan and List of University of California, San Diego people regarding the inclusion of Mike Hou, and so I reverted them, explaining why on those articles' talk pages and asking for discussion. Lajolla2009 proceeded to re-revert, and then delete my comments on those articles' talk pages, as well as the comments I made on User Talk:Lajolla2009. I don't want to get into a revert war, but I'm not sure of the proper course of action. Would you please advise? Many thanks. Realitycookie (talk) 07:53, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Much appreciated, thank you very much. Realitycookie (talk) 07:59, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Cell (Dragon Ball Z)

Since I was unable to, can you move it back to Cell (Dragon Ball)? The base name and franchise is "Dragon Ball", not its sequels. This is why we use Baby (Dragon Ball) over Baby (Dragon Ball GT). Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 15:55, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Admin coaching (2)

I saw your edit to admin coaching. That brought back memories from my somewhat early days on Misplaced Pages only four months ago. Sigh. I still don't know why you would ever choose me as a coachee over the other, probably more capable people, especially at the time! :) Anyways, are you still looking for another coachee? I know a few of the guys on WP:ADCO/RFC, but one that caught my eye was User:ThinkBlue, who I converse with regularly, mostly about WP:GAN stuff though so I don't know how well-versed she is in administrator-related stuff. She's a great person, though, and dedicated content-builder, like myself. Gary King (talk) 03:38, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Hm I just noticed that there are other admin requests on your talk page. What's up with those? :p Also, I don't know if I already mentioned it or not, but I will be AFK in early August. I'll be in Los Angeles. Nice, hot, smoggy weather, here I come! Gary King (talk) 03:51, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Reactions/Celebrations of the September 11th attacks

Sephiroth, I apologise for bringing this matter up with you again, but would you kindly consider the following exchange of words, here. User Jaakobou insists that the recent AfD result (keep, and merge Celebrations into Reactions) is non-applicable because "AfDs are about deletion/keeping, not merging", therefore editors are free to ignore the outcome. Is this argument correct, or is Jaakobou stalling for time, as the following curious post seems to suggest? (diff) If Jaakobou is wrong, and the merge result is quite legitimate, would you kindly advise this user to proceed with it, because I've a feeling (s)he will not listen to me. — eon, 20:02, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Regarding Cell (Dragon Ball Z)

Did you look into this? Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 20:36, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

I don't see any discussion with the person who performed the merge. I'm not going to unilateraly revert him if there's no consensus to do so. Sephiroth BCR 20:42, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
What merge? There was no consensus on changing the disambiguator to "(Dragon Ball Z)". That's why I'm asking if you can undo it. Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 20:46, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Move, my bad. Anyhow, have you discussed the issue at all with the person who performed the merge? He had a valid reason to move the article, and some consensus has to exist for your version for there to be a revert back. Discuss first. Sephiroth BCR 20:49, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
There was a survey that ended with the page being moved to "Baby (Dragon Ball)", see this. That good enough or should I chat with the editor who moved the page? Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 21:00, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Chat. That discussion was more than a year ago. Sephiroth BCR 21:02, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

The Mana World AfD

Hi. I noticed your input on this article's AfD. You mentioned that this AfD may have been a bad idea. I was curious about why you thought so. I guess I should explain my rationale a little about nominating the article as well. I was patrolling new pages when this page was created. The initial draft didn't contain much in the way of notability, either in claims or in sources. I Googled around some and couldn't find much on the game on the net either. I proposed the article for deletion and the author removed the tag. The author provided some external links, but they weren't really reliable in my opinion. That's when I put the article up for AfD. I'd be glad to hear your input about the process. Cheers! TNX-Man 01:39, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Dragon Ball Z content not posted

Something was really bothering me about the Dragon Ball Z article. In the section about the Dragon Balls, it fails to mention one critical event in the series. It's around the time that Dende nearly dies and Piccolo is talking with Gohan and the gang. Well I think it's a very important turning point in the series, especially when Piccolo mentions, in a Melancholic tone that "the Balls are inert" and he proceeds to state how they are in "his other pants pocket", but that it "wouldn't make a bit of difference" anyway. What do you think about this??? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.159.151.1 (talk) 07:27, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Murray Bishoff

I'm trying to format the references to improve the article. Please stop mindlessly reverting it. You have broken the 3 revert rule. 210.87.17.39 (talk) 07:30, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
