Ya'alon has a reputation of being exteremely an honest man. His history as an Ashkenaz Kibbutz members saved him from the witch-hunt that the Israeli left done to his predessecor - the oriental Jew Shaul Mofaz.
Like many former chiefs of staff, Ya'alon tends to get complicated with the media because contraversial things he says. For example: Ya'alon's famous soundbyte "we won" caused a little scandal in the Israeli political system. However, it was turned out that he was mis-queoted by the press and his orginal queote was "every side can claim he won".
