"Causing a Commotion"
Song
B-side"Jimmy, Jimmy"

"Causing a Commotion" is the second single by American singer-songwriter Madonna from the soundtrack album and motion picture Who's That Girl and was released on August 25, 1987 by Sire Records. Its Silver Screen Single Mix later appeared on the 1991 UK compilation EP The Holiday Collection, which was released to accompany the 1990 compilation album The Immaculate Collection, on which the song did not appear.

Song information

The song was written and produced by Madonna and long-term co-writer Stephen Bray. The versions that appear on the singles were remixed by Shep Pettibone.

In the United States, "Causing A Commotion" was released in the autumn of 1987, debuting on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart at a lofty number forty-one the week of September 12, as "Who's That Girl" was descending from the top ten of the chart. The single ascended up the chart, ultimately peaking at number two the week of October 24, the same week Michael Jackson's "Bad" advanced to the pole position. While "Causing A Commotion" couldn't break the chart success of "Bad," it was strong enough to remain in the runner up position of the Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks.

In the United Kingdom, the song was released just before the commencement of Madonna's 1987 Who's That Girl Tour and reached number four in the UK charts.

The song was never released in France, where "The Look of Love" was released as the second and last commercial single from the Who's That Girl soundtrack. Madonna performed this song on her Who's That Girl and Blond Ambition tours; the former being debuted "live via satellite" during the telecast of the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards. Despite its high chart position, "Causing a Commotion" has never been included on any of Madonna's compilation albums.

The song was used in Japanese TV commercials for Mitsubishi's "Hi-Fi" VCR players, in this instance the "HV-F33". It saw her dancing with the young man, or an actor of similar appearance, as in the video to "Open Your Heart" against a white background. This was the first commercial to feature the tag-line "Dreams Come True," the catch-phrase for the Mitsubishi-sponsored leg of the Japanese Who's That Girl tour. The phrase was subsequently used in Mitsubishi commercials, telephone cards and press packages featuring Madonna until the last commercial; "Spotlight" in 1988.

The canadian teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation named an episode after this song.

Music video

Although no music video was made, a live performance of "Causing a Commotion" from the Who's That Girl Tour in Turin, Italy was used as a video by MTV.
