Melanie Williams is a United Kingdom based singer. She is best known for singing on the hit record, "Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)" alongside the Manchester dance outfit Sub Sub (who later became Doves).
Career
Williams was a friend of Sub Sub at the time, and the band, searching for a female guest vocalist, featured her vocals. This helped expose her talents to the public, and was followed by further critical success.
Williams and her writing colleague Eric Gooden, found Square One Studios in Bury, Lancashire. The proprieter Trevor Taylor, liked what he heard and they began recording a string of tracks assisted by house engineer and musician Stephen Boyce-Buckley, subsequently landing a recording contract with 10 Records; a sub-division of Virgin Records. Temper Temper put in a bid for the Miami Vice TV series theme tune, a track called 'Lovers and Gamblers' the bid was won by Jan Hammer.
Williams launched a solo career in 1994 as a soul/dance singer, signed to Columbia Records. Her debut solo single, "All Cried Out!" peaked at #60 in the UK Singles Chart. The follow-up, "Everyday Thang" peaking at #38. Her next single, the ballad "Not Enough?" managed a #65 chart placing. Her debut album Human Cradle failed to reach the UK Albums Chart.
Mel has also featured on an Adrian Snell album 'Father' in which she reads psalm 139. They were recording in the same studio, Adrian heard her and liked her voice and so asked her to guest on his album.
Early in 1995, Williams returned to the UK Top 40 with a cover of "You Are Everything" (a duet with Joe Roberts (musician)). The song reached #28.
The The Other Two's second album Superhighways featured Melanie Williams on some tracks as a guest vocalist.
Following her collaboration with Eric Gooden, after her solo projects Melanie started to record with Joe Roberts. Joe had hits with 'Lover' and 'Love is energy' both of which include shots and vocals of Williams in the Videos. Together they covered 'You are Everything' originally done by Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye and 'Adore' originally by Prince.
In spite of the Classic status of 90s #2 aint no love aint no use with Doves (then sub-sub) the track is rare and hard to find. Current easy to find examples of Melanie's work can be found on itunes with Dark Flower under R&B category (love will bring us back together) and Bodhi track 'mire' (feat Mr Benz) there are two bands called Bodhi so look for the one under pop category. These continue the trend of Melanie's original radio edit's going on to become Dance tunes. Both Dark Flower and Bodhi are incarnations of the Melanie Williams Joe Roberts duo.
