The following is a list of people whose alleged vegetarianism is controversial. The following people may or may not be vegetarian.
- Adolf Hitler - Most of the biographies of Hitler, including those by Joachim Fest and Ian Kershaw, state that Hitler became a steadfast vegetarian after the death of his niece Geli Raubal in 1931, but Hitler may have continued to eat sausages, liver, pigeon (squab), caviar, and ham. In any case, the definition of vegetarianism was well established by this time, as the 1911 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica defined Vegetarianism as, "...a comparatively modern word, which came into use about the year 1847, as applied to the use of foods from which fish, flesh, and fowl are excluded." Biographer John Toland quotes Hitler's close friend Frau Hess as stating that after Raubal's death, "Hitler never ate another piece of meat except for liver dumplings." Biographer Robert Payne argues that Joseph Goebbels (Hitler's propaganda minister) invented the myth of vegetarianism to give Hitler the aura of an ascetic. Author Bee Wilson also casts doubt on Hitler's vegetarianism. Wilson claims that Hitler's dietician, Marlene von Exner, added animal products to Hitler's diet without Hitler's approval. What is known for certain is that in private conversations, Hitler espoused the merits of eating vegetables, especially raw vegetables, fruit and grains over meat or sweets, particularly for children and soldiers.
