"The Trouble with Love Is" is the fourth and final single from pop rock singer Kelly Clarkson's debut album, Thankful.
The single is most remembered for being Clarkson's first (and to date only) song not to chart (it reached one place below the bottom of the Billboard Hot 100). It is also the love theme in the movie, Love Actually. It was co-written by Clarkson, Evan Rogers, and Carl Sturken and co-produced by Rogers and Sturken. A bluesy number, it has Clarkson explaining how love can be wonderful but also what the trouble with love is.
Clarkson had been pressing for other singles choices from the album, but following the poor performance of "Low" and the success of the ballad "A Moment Like This", her label felt she needed to go back to ballads. However, this failed, as "The Trouble with Love Is" had slight R&B/soul influences that were unsuitable for airplay of ballads at the time. (Adult Contemporary radio and Hot Adult Contemporary radio usually stay away from ballads of this genre.) As a last resort, the song was added as the love theme of Love Actually. This also failed to generate interest in the song.
"The Trouble with Love Is" continued a trend started by Clarkson's previous single "Low", by flopping. The song did chart on the Adult Top 40, Top 40 Tracks, and the Top 40 Mainstream, but failed to do so on the Billboard Hot 100 or the Hot 100 Airplay.
The song was released as a double A-side in the United Kingdom with "Low", and not surprisingly it also flopped, peaking at number thirty-five. It did best in Australia, peaking at number eleven. It was not released in Canada.
