Revision as of 21:39, 18 November 2008 by Fayenatic london (talk | contribs) (moved African pope to List of African popes over redirect: Reinstating "list" title now that the disambiguation tag has been rightly removed)(diff) ← Previous revision | Latest revision (diff) | Newer revision → (diff)Three popes have had African birth or heritage. According to the records of the Liber Pontificalis, all three were from the Roman Province of Africa (corresponding to the territory of modern Tunisia and Libya). The conquest of Byzantine North Africa by Muslims during the 7th century largely eliminated the chance for another African pope until modern times.
- Pope Victor I (189 to 199)
- Pope Miltiades (310/311 to 314)
- Pope Gelasius I (492 to 496)
Although these three popes came from the continent of Africa, they are usually depicted as white because of their Berber origins, and so none of them can really be called a black pope.
