Starting in 2001 , Schoen worked as a system administrator for the EFF.
He is widely known for behind-the-scenes programming, such as the extraction of spyware blacklists (a story which Wired broke in 1999, with Schoen their inside source), and for his publications, including the DeCSS haiku .
