Properly, the "S" in Harry S Truman should have no period after it. "S" is not an abbreviation for a middle name; it is his middle name, itself.

Truman served in the United States Senate, representing Missouri, prior to becoming Vice President under Franklin Delano Roosevelt in March 1945. When Roosevelt died, Truman became President, and presided over the events ending World War II. It was Truman who made the decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.

Truman ran for president in his own right in 1948, winning by a narrow margin over Republican challenger Thomas Dewey.

Truman issued the executive order integrating the U.S. Armed Services following World War II.
