The City of Stamford, Connecticut Fire Rescue Department is comprised of approximately 290 members who operate 9 Engine Companies(two of which-Engine's 5 and 6-are quints or combination engines and trucks), 3 Truck Companies, 1 Heavy Rescue Company, and 1 HAZ-MAT. company.. All of the apparatus with the exception of Engines 8 and 9 are staffed with a minimum of one officer (Captain or Lieutenant), one assigned driver, and two firefighters. Engines 8 and 9 have one officer, one driver , and one firefighter.

There is also one Shift Commander (Deputy Chief with DC Aide). The department operates on a 24 on/72 off schedule, averaging 42 hours a week. The department responds to over 9,000 calls per year and with the addition of Engines 8 and 9 in July of 2008 is on track to respond to over 11,000 calls for FY 2008-2009. In addition to firefighting duties members provide first-responder medical assistance (EMT), hazardous materials response, technical rescue services, under-water SCUBA rescue service, fire prevention service, and fire education service.
