It was promoted by Deng Xiaoping beginning in the late 1970s and is a part of the official idiology of Socialism with Chinese characteristics. The phrase means to look for economic and political solutions that have practical application rather than economic and political solutions based on political ideology (such as those of Mao Zedong). Seek Truth from Facts was originally a slogan promoted by Mao.
