One Piece is an anime series based on the manga of the same title by Eiichirō Oda. Produced by Toei Animation, and directed by Konosuke Uda and Munehisa Sakai, the series debuted in Japan on Fuji TV on October 20, 1999. As of December 28, 2008, 383 episodes of the series have aired, spanning ten seasons. One Piece follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy, who gained supernatural abilities by eating a magical fruit, and his ragtag crew of heroic pirates, named the Straw Hats. Luffy's greatest ambition is to obtain the world's ultimate treasure, One Piece, and thereby become the next Pirate King.
The series has been dubbed in English by three different companies. 4Kids Entertainment licensed the series for a dubbed broadcast and release in North America. The 4Kids episodes aired in the United States on the Fox network as part of the Fox Box block, premiering on September 18, 2004. The episodes were heavily edited, with the first 143 episodes cut down to 104. In December 2006, 4Kids cancelled production of the dubbed version. In Singapore, the anime is licensed by Odex, who produced an English dub which lasted 104 episodes in two 52 episode seasons. On April 12, 2007, Funimation Entertainment announced it had acquired the license for the series and would be producing a new English voice dub in preparation for releasing the series to DVD. The first unedited, bilingual DVD box set, containing 13 episodes, was released on May 27, 2008. Similarly sized sets followed with two sets released as of September 16, 2008. The Funimation English dubbed episodes premiered on the Cartoon Network on September 29, 2007 and aired until it was canceled on March 29, 2008. In Australia, Cartoon Network resumed airing One Piece episodes on November 3, 2008, starting with episode 170. On December 1, 2008, they started airing one new episode each weekday, starting with episode 165. Cartoon Network Australia has aired up to episode 191 as of January 1 2009.
