The American Academy of Financial Management, or AAFM as it is known, holds the status of a Board of Standards certifying body and professional association dedicated to the finance sector and finance professionals. According to the statistics in the latest annual report AAFM claim's it membership of approximately 200,000 is active in over 140 countries. The association maintains training centers and key offices in: Hong Kong, USA, Singapore, Dubai, Beijing PRC, Mexico, and more. More than 2/3rds of the association's membership is now offshore, with the AAFM website listing their fastest growing membership regions as Asia and Middle-East.

Background

The AAFM was founded in 1996, via a merger between the American Academy of Financial Management & Analysts (AAFMA) and the Founders Advisory Committee of the Original Tax and Estate Planning Law Review of Louisiana. The academy association has been established in accordance with the laws of the United States as a professional association, and is subsequently governed by a Board of Standards, a membership code of ethics and a written standards of practice. In most countries AAFM is required to operate as a ‘society’ or non-profit association, with the members of the local or regional chapter making up the ‘owners’ of the society.

The AAFM's recognized professional board certifications and designations are used while observing US Supreme Court cases such as (Ibanez vs. Florida) which applies to generalized financial planning certifications.

Graduate Post Nominal designations

Unlike other board certifying organizations such as the CFA Institute and the CFP Institute, who are probably seen as AAFM's most significant competitors, the AAFM offers multiple professional designations to members who qualify, instead of a sole qualification. The 20 or so professional designations that AAFM offers are actually registered trademarks owned by the association and it's membership.

To qualify to use the designation(s) members must either have come through one of the AAFM Accredited University Finance programs (such as Universities within AACSB, ACBSP, etc), through an Executive Training Program, or in some rare cases through grandfathering by way of board/peer review. AAFM is best recognized for its designations being in alliance with the AACSB International Accreditation Agency, the ACBSP Accreditation Agency, and listed and disclosed with various authorities such as: Investor Education, , Department of Labor, or National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD). Individual Universities have also partnered with AAFM on Executive Education, Diploma and Degree programs, such as the partnership maintained by Thomas Jefferson School of Law in California

AAFM Designations are available as executive certification courses for accredited degree holders in: North and South America as well as Asia, India, and the Middle East through a variety of so-called licensed education providers. AAFM does not disclose the process by which it qualifies partner institutions or providers.
