U.S. Highway system |
United States Highway 5 is a north-south United States highway. Although the "5" in its route number would suggest a border-to-border route, US 5 only traverses three New England states between Canada and the Atlantic Ocean. The "grand American route" honors went instead to the fabled US 1.
Termini
As of 2004, the highway's northern terminus is in Derby Line, Vermont at the Canadian border, where it continues as Provincial Highway 143. Its southern terminus is in New Haven, Connecticut at an intersection with Interstate 91. In fact, the entire route of US 5 closely parallels Interstate 91, whose northern terminus is also Derby Line (where it continues as Quebec Autoroute 55).
States traversed
The highway passes through the following states:
Miles | km | state | |
192 | 309 | Vermont | |
53 | 85 | Massachusetts | |
55 | 88 | Connecticut | |
300 | 483 | Total |
Connecticut
US 5 begins in the town of New Haven (southern terminus). According to the Connecticut Department of Transportation, the US 5 designation officially begins at Exit 5 of Interstate 91 on State Street at the end of the exit ramp.
