Jussi Kristian Halla-aho (born 27 April, 1971 in Tampere) is a Finnish Slavic linguist and blogger who has became famous for his texts that criticize Finland's policy of immigration and multiculturalism. He is the best known political blogger in Finland.
Immigration critic
Halla-aho maintains a blog titled Scripta that deals with issues such as immigration, multiculturalism, tolerance, racism, freedom of speech and political correctness. His blog has between 3,000 and 6,000 readers a day. In 2008, Google Inc. announced that "Jussi Halla-aho" is the fifth most popular Google search of all Finnish people excluding music personalities.
He became a member of Helsinki Council in the 2008 municipal elections as a candidate of the True Finns party although he is not a member of any party. In the 2008 elections, he was the 18th most popular candidate in the entire country and the second most popular candidate of the True Finns party after party leader Timo Soini. Halla-aho won the largest number of personal votes for the party in Helsinki. He has stated that he is into politics because he thinks that the Finnish immigration policy is a problem and Europe is heading towards catastrophe because of massive immigration.
According to Halla-aho, the biggest problem is large amounts of immigrants compared to the chances to integrate newcomers. He has stated that minority group whose integration has failed everywhere are muslims that come from certain parts of the globe. According to Halla-aho, these are often cultures that honour force unlike western civilization and as long as these newcomers stick in to their characteristics and society encourages them to wrap into their divergence adaptation is not possible and that creates the problems of social exclusion and ethnic ghettoization. He has stated that discrimination and privileges should not be allowed because of ones culture or nationality. According to Halla-aho, criticizing totalitarian fascist ideologies like political Islam is not racism and the facts can not be criminalized.
In November 2008, Helsingin Sanomat asked its readers "Is Jussi Halla-aho right in his immigration criticism?" (it was Helsingin Sanomat's the question of the day). During 24 hours 11,473 people participated in Helsingin Sanomat's survey; 66% answered yes and 34% no.
According to Halla-aho, immigration is a taboo in Finland. He has received death threats because of his web columns, and in December 2008, Finnish police began investigation on Halla-aho for incitement of a racial group because of his texts. Halla-aho has denied has denied that he is an anti-foreigner. He maintains that he is simply “critical of immigration”.
Scientific career
Halla-aho is a Ph.D. who has written his dissertation about historical nominal morphology of Old Church Slavonic.
Halla-aho studied at the University of Helsinki from 1995 to 2000. During that period he studied Russian, Croatian, Polish and Ukrainian, and various dead languages such as Latin, Greek, Sanskrit, Old Persian, Old Irish and Old English. During his post-graduate period (2000-2006) he worked at the Department of Slavonic and Baltic Studies as a researcher and teacher of Old Church Slavic.
Halla-aho completed his dissertation Problems of Proto-Slavic historical nominal morphology, on the basis of Old Church Slavic in 2006. In his dissertation, Halla-aho offers a diachronic solution for a number of difficult inflectional endings in Old Church Slavic nominal declensions.
In addition to his dissertation, Halla-aho has published articles in scientific journals, edited selection of papers by slavists, baltologists and balkanists from Austria, Croatia, Canada, Finland, Latvia, Poland, Russia and the United States of America and written Old Church Slavic Manual, which is used at the University of Helsinki.
Halla-aho's scientific interests include comparative Indo-European linguistics, especially nominal morphology and theoretical questions related to the principles of reconstruction, Old Church Slavic, historical morphology of Slavic languages, Gothic and Phrygian languages.
Since April 2007 he has been working on, together with translator Juri Zub, a Ukrainian-Finnish dictionary, funded by the Finnish Cultural Fund.
Personal life
Halla-aho lives in the southernmost district of Helsinki, Eira, with his wife Hilla Halla-aho and their three children: two daughters, Hilma (born 2003) and Kerttu (2004), and a son Veikko (2008). Halla-aho has told that his children and family are the main reason why he takes part in social debate.
