Caracas, population 3.2 million (2001 census), is the capital of Venezuela. It is located in the north of the country, close to the Caribbean Sea.

The city was founded in 1567 as Santiago de León de Caracas by Spanish explorer Diego de Losada.

South American revolutionary leader Simón Bolívar was born in Caracas.

An earthquake destroyed Caracas on March 26, 1812.

The metro system that serves in the city is called El Metro and is operated by C.A. Metro de Caracas.

Nearby Maiquetia has Maiquetia International Airport.
