Modern gothic culture is known to have musically developed from, with and through the following genres, to which can be applied the term "gothic":
While other genres of music exist that have been heavily influenced by the goth subculture, such as Gothic metal, Shoegazing and Dream Pop, these genres cannot be traced back to the original line of musical development within the goth scene.
