The term micronation refers to purported independent 'nations' claimed to exist by an individual or group, but which have little or no real population and no territory under their control. Examples of micronations include Hutt River Province (a farm in Western Australia which claims to have seceded from Australia and to be an independent principality). Micronations have been around for decades, but with the spread of the Internet there are now many websites representing micronations. For example, see .
