Spam in TurnKey Linux

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on TurnKey Linux, by another Misplaced Pages user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because TurnKey Linux is blatant advertising for a company, product, group, service or person that would require a substantial rewrite in order to become an encyclopedia article.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting TurnKey Linux, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Orphaned non-free media (File:Django.png)

Thanks for uploading File:Django.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Misplaced Pages under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Misplaced Pages. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Misplaced Pages (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:24, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of TurnKey Linux

If you feel it was an error, sorry ma'am. But in my opinion, it was indeed an advertising. You may request a review here. I will not restore it until the consensus is to restore. FYI, an IP tagged it for deletion under WP:CSD #G11, and please, be respectful to others even if they have committed "mistakes". Thanks and thank you for your contributions to the project. --Efe (talk) 00:58, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

And please be civil. We don't need sarcasm here. Thank you. --Efe (talk) 02:44, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
I see. You are vehement with this discussion because, as your user page states: "Finally created a user account in Misplaced Pages to facilitate full transparency over my edits. Especially edits in which I was directly or indirectly promoting various projects I am involved with (e.g., I'm one of the developers for TurnKey Linux, a new opensource project)." It seems you are in a conflict of interest. --Efe (talk) 02:44, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I'm one of the developers. I made that very clear in my user page. I contribute to TurnKey Linux for the same reasons I contribute to Misplaced Pages itself, or to DMOZ where I am an editor, because I believe in giving back to the same source of free wealth which has given so much to me. TurnKey Linux is a community effort to help users get up and running with various Linux servers applications and asks for nothing in return. It's not selling anything, so how you could force it to fit in Misplaced Pages's criteria for spam is beyond me. Again, your lack of reasonable judgement in this matter borders on malice. The Misplaced Pages article is a relevant and legitimate way to educate users who are interested in software appliances that the project exists. It's about the same "conflict of interest" that Jimmy Wales has with Misplaced Pages. We both want what's best for our community. - LirazSiri (talk) 03:10, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
Well, its entirely your opinion. We'll just see how the discussion goes at WP:Deletion review. --Efe (talk) 03:14, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Confict of interest

I see above that you admit you are a developer of TurnKey Linux. We have a policy on conflict of interest and we really don't like self-promotion. If you continue to make waves about your article about your product, you may be blocked fomr editing for disruption. Guy (Help!) 22:09, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

  • I will continue to express my opinions and advocate for what I believe in despite your threats to censor me for "making waves". Threatening language is abusive and counter-productive to the well-being of the project, especially when it comes from someone that has been granted additional privileges.
  • There is no conflict of interest since both my contributions to Misplaced Pages and my contributions to TurnKey Linux serve the free software community, not myself personally. This is not self promotion, as I am not promoting myself. I am advocating for a free software project I contribute to, much as I contribute to Misplaced Pages and the Open Directory Project. I also contribute to Ubuntu, so does that mean I can't contribute to Ubuntu articles on Misplaced Pages? Or to articles about ODP? - LirazSiri (talk) 22:54, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
No more of a conflict of interest (I mean real-world conflict of interest, not WP:COI) than an admin saving themselves the trouble of making an argument over notability by using his or her deletion privileges.
I don't know if you've stopped watching that deletion review page but I agree with you 100% even if you're a developer on that project, LirazSiri. That article might still deserve deletion but it clearly isn't spam and it deserves the normal deletion process - no reason for admins to be screwing around like this, if everything said about notability and conflicts of interest is true they ought to be able to get through the normal deletion process no sweat without making things up about a concern over spam. --❨Ṩtruthious andersnatch❩ 03:13, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
  • Thank you for sticking up for me. I promised myself I would leave this and let the Misplaced Pages process run through its course. Defending the entry against the deletionist mob seems hopeless and is taking up much more of my energy than I can rationally justify. I would have liked to have a chance to defend the article before it was deleted through a normal deletion process but alas it is too late. Yes, I agree that there is a strange abuse of process going on but as the creator of the article and a contributor to the project it describes my arguments don't seem to count for much. I feel my contributions have been callously singled out and I find the abusive attitude of the admins involved particularly discouraging (e.g., "stop making waves or we will ban you" - see above). It's sad really. - LirazSiri (talk) 05:28, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
  • This falls squarely within the WIkipedia definition of WP:COI - editing articles on ones own endeavours. Wikilawyering won't change that, and if you continue to agitate for content on your own work then you may indeed be blocked for disruption, this is quite common. Nothing to do with suppressing or censoring and everything to do with our core policies and goals, which have absolutely nothing to do with providing people with a platform to promote their own work. Instead of coming up with all the reasons we should ignore the multipple policies and guidelines which discourage or forbid this kind of thing, you'd be better advised to read and understand the five pillars, Bad Article Ideas and spend time working on other areas where you have no vested interest. One other thing: it is a bad mistake to listen only to those whose opinion you like. The TurnKey faq says: TurnKey Linux is a community-oriented opensource project started by Alon Swartz and Liraz Siri. You're not just one of the community or one of a group of people involved in this, you are essentially its owner and co-founder; it is virtually impossible for you to have a proper objective view about a product in which you are so vested. Guy (Help!) 07:54, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
  • I find it odd that you continue to persist in your attacks even after I have requested to remove my request for a deletion review.
  • It's not a product. It's a community oriented free software project, that shares much of the same ideals and principles with Misplaced Pages itself. Most people who share these ideals would give me brownie points for contributing to a free software project and buy me beer for actually going to the trouble of co-founding a new project in an underserved niche (software appliances). You on the other hand, seem to be holding it against me. Thanks for the encouragement.
  • At no point did I try to hide my contribution to the project described in the entry. Quite the contrary. The desire for full transparency was the reason I created the account in the first place. I also changed the FAQ on the website myself to accurately describe my involvement. Despite this you seem to be implying that I acted out of nefarious motives and contributed to Misplaced Pages in bad faith. Basically, you are poisoning the well and I think it would have been preferable if my contributions were judged based on their merit, rather than their point of origin.
  • I think you should reread Misplaced Pages:NOBIGDEAL and stop waving your Administrator privileges around so callously. This is the second time you have threatened to block me for expressing my opinions. Either stop making idle threats or go ahead and block me already. It seems you are just itching for an excuse, plus I've reviewed your history and you seem to take delight in it. Be my guest. - LirazSiri (talk) 11:53, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
