Esperanza
Hello, I'm trying to show some people off my friends list a new society, somewhat similar to WP:KC, Esperanza. Its still in its early stages but nonetheless I'd appreciate it were you to join. Redwolf24 (talk) 06:25, 28 August 2005 (UTC)
No, no!
Don't apologize. It was appreciated. There is (massive) discussion going on at User:Uriah923/OmniNerd if you'd like to help us sort this all out. Quite a few good 'Pedians are now helping out. Thanks. Dmcdevit·t 21:49, September 2, 2005 (UTC)
- Oh yeah, and I should probably tell you that I don't have any "authority" here. I am your equal (and that's not false modesty). Dmcdevit·t 21:51, September 2, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks!
Hey, Mysekurity. Thanks for the strong, and enthusiastic support in my RfA; I was very surprised by the amount of support it gained. It's been a while since I saw you around A/VfD, so I guess you're doing the writing articles at the moment. I like your current sig, by the way! Please do keep an eye on me and my logs, especially whilst I'm learning my around my new buttons and let me know if I can ever be of any help. Thanks again, Splash 17:22, 9 September 2005 (UTC)
- Splash, thank you for the thank you . It is truly refreshing that you would actually put some thought into your thank-yous instead of copying and pasting the same message over and over again (including an incorrect username) to everyone who supported your RfA, unlike some others. I thank you for your comments, and by you writing an individualized response, I feel much more appreciated in my voting. The fact that your RfA was one of the highest ranked astonishes me on how you were able to write personalized notes to each and every one who voted. It is true that I do not spend as much time on VfD as I once did (many things contributed to that fact), and I'm glad you like my new sig. (I keep trying to type in Word using wikisyntax , and the idea just stuck.) I was wondering however, if it were possible to kern the characters of the sig. I want to have my contribs and talk part be kerned over the date and time, and wondered if there was a script that would allow me to do that. Thanks much, ] 03:36, 10 September 2005 (UTC)
- Well, some people got more of a boilerplate message than others, but I tried to repay the time some had taken to write a comment (usually a nice one!) by writing one of my own back. Anyway, I'm 99% sure I've seen the question about kerning asked before and 99% sure the answer was "it can't be done, at least not yet" (which makes me 98.01% certain overall). I've tried a few things myself, and Googled and such, but I can't find anything. Apparently newer versions of (X)HTML support a <%math%></%math%> construct which approximates the alignment features properly. I don't think any browser usefully supports this at the moment (and IE definitely won't). But if I spot someone with such a sig, I'll let you know! -Splash 13:54, 10 September 2005 (UTC) (PS. In show preview I think I noticed your sig missing a closing /sub tag, unless I deleted it by accident)
- Not sure which section you'd prefer this in! I don't recall if I had seen your current sig around at some point just recently, but I was probably commenting on the Sunglasses at Night. Yeah, I've heard that — though I don't own the relevant software (or hardware, for that matter!). I think I like the wiki-ness of your current sig, square brackets etc. Happy editing!-Splash 20:17, 10 September 2005 (UTC)

- Thanks for the google search (and that interesting math you did), but hopefully it will be implimented soon. You are correct that the sig is missing a /sub tag, and that is something I hope you can help me with also. I don't want to create a template for my sig, but using the sig box in preferences doesn't allow one to mess with the UTC date/time code. At the end of the sig, I added in a (sub) tag to make the date and time subscripted to contrast with the additions | email superscript, but there is no way of closing the tag in the prefs box. I was under the impression that if a line was left unclosed, the software (mediawiki/browser) would automatically close it, but maybe I'm wrong. In any event, I think I'll try to remember to sign my posts from now on my using the customary 4 tildes followed by a /sub tag, unless I can find a fix. Thanks much, ] 16:43, 10 September 2005 (UTC)
- Oh, yeah, that would explain it. I suspect it would probably be auto-fixed sometimes like at the end of a bullet point or something, but not in ordinary flowing text. I can't think of a way around the MediaWiki being too helpful. By the way, I did see your message on my talk page, but didn't reply to avoid complications while HC was clearning me up! I wonder if you might post your edit in the relevant section of my talk page, just so that I have it complete and then I can archive it again. Thanks. -Splash 18:27, 10 September 2005 (UTC)

Thank you, Mysekurity. These are all helpful suggestions, and I can see there is much study ahead. I am a professional editor but, as you have noticed, I have been editing and adding to this page with one or both hands behind my back, editing by imitation rather than seriously knowing what I am doing. re: Archiving talk pages
As far as I know there's no WP: page on length of Talk: pages, although there is standing advice that articles themselves not be longer than 32kB unless there is a good reason. Anyway, yes, it's fine to archive a talk page, whenever you judge it is becoming unwieldy or is out of date &mdash. Particularly when one lengthy discussion has finished and another is starting, it can keep things clean; ; 32kB wouldn't be a bad guideline. Obviously don't archive any discussions that may not yet be completed (unless the discussion has moved on from that particular issue or something), or are affected by discussions elsewhere. Hope that helps. -Splash 03:47, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

Relistings
Hi Mysekurity. Me relisting AfDs such as that is something of an experiment, hence the comment I've included in them. I relisted a bunch yesterday too (interestingly, 17 yesterday from the 3rd and 18 today from the 4th). Although they do have consensus, and usually unanimity for the most part, it is far from uncommon for the nominator and first participator to have their minds changed during the AfD. In these 30-some cases it is very unlikely, I admit. As an example of the effect of relisting, look at the top of AfD for the 12th; the first 17ish are me relisting. They all know have easily enough votes that there is no doubt about the outcome next time round. Hopefully the same will happen to today's relistings, including your one within the same sort of time frame. If it doesn't, then a push-poll wouldn't be unreasonable.
If people start telling me I should just be deleting (or whatevering) such AfDs, then I will start doing so since it feels bureaucratic to relist some of the particularly obvious cases. The other option I have is casting a late vote myself and leaving it for the next admin to decide if that's enough participants for them or not. -Splash 01:08, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
Sig
You might want to check the "raw signatures" box on preferences, unless it is like that on purpose. Howabout1 03:13, September 13, 2005 (UTC)
- Ohhh..... (I was foncused at first). Yeah it's checked! You dont find that clever? Notice how it links to my userpage (with Esperanza), then talk, then contribs, then e-mail? Of course that's intentional, but thanks for the concern. If you notice the code, you'll see how extensive the wikimarkup is (2 nowiki tags, etc.), and I'm trying to think of a better sig, but this is all I'm able to imagine now. Perhaps it might be better outside of a wiki environment, where it would be a reference to the wiki, instead of someone like yourself thinking it was unintentional. Again, thank you for your concern, and happy editing. -] 03:20, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

Comics Collaboration of the Fortnight
As a member of WikiProject Comics, I thought you might be interested in the Comics Collaboration of the Fortnight we have set up. Please feel free to vote on the articles listed, although bear in mind that a vote for a particular article means you are pledging to help improve the article. The goal of the collaboration is to improve articles to Featured Article status, as we feel Comics is under-represented in that area. Thanks for your help. The charter is here. (Relating to Esperanza)
Hello Mysekurity, the Charter for Esperanza is up. Take a looksie :) Redwolf24 (talk) 02:52, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
Esperanza made less bureaucratic
Hello again, I have (unilatterly) taken away the 'assembly' idea, as per my reasons at that edit summary and per Misplaced Pages talk:Esperanza/Charter. I have left the admin general, as some leadership is good. Now, all you have to do is be a member to establish consensus, the whole assembly idea is gone. Also, I have added an advisory committee, of four members, with limited power besides watching over the admin general and making sure he doesn't do anything stupid. Please look at the ammended charter, and I would love a comment. Redwolf24 (talk) 00:26, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

Hello Mysekurity. As you may or may not know, there have been some troubles with Esperanza. So now, as a last ditch to save the community, please vote at Misplaced Pages:Esperanza/Reform on all neccisary polls. P.S. I'm very sorry for spamming you all with these messages, and this will be the last time. I recommend putting ESP on your watchlist. Cheers and please look at that, let's stop the civil war then. Re: The Simpsons
It surprises me that with the huge number of pages dedicated to this very show, its primary article, The Simpsons is not a FA. It was peer reviewed once (with only one comment), and I'd like to see it be reviewed a second time. Anyone agreeing with me, please drop me a line on my talk page (as I won't be in that much), or on this page, or go ahead and re-nominate it. It seems well-written, with good rationale for everything, and I believe it's FA quality stuff. -] 03:44, 20 September 2005 (UTC)
- I agree with you all the way. I was the one who initally put it up for peer review a few months ago, but nohing really came of it. I think the article needs a bit of work to become a good FA candidate, but nobody seems to want to go through it and fix things. Perhaps the new Simpsons wikiportal I recently created will boost enthusiasm for this article (and related ones). -Kaizersoze 23:19, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
Your user page needs less Image:Cowbell2.gif
You have the image Image:Cowbell2.gif on the page User:Mysekurity/To do page; this image is copyrighted and used in the Will Ferrell article under Misplaced Pages:Fair use. The use on your user page of that image is unlikely to be covered by use however, and as such is probably a Copyright violation. Could you remove the image from that page? Thanks. --fvw* 23:42, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
- Too bad, I really like that image (and skit), but good call anyway. Maybe could I make a link to Image:Cowbell2.jpg, instead of the image, or is that not covered? (I shall comply, sadly). -] 01:06, 25 September 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, you could probably get away with linking it, I won't complain about it anyway. This is where it all gets a bit fuzzy, as fair use wasn't really designed with HTML in mind. In theory, being able to view/link the image without the article might not be allowed under fair use, but it's technically unavoidable. --fvw* 01:13, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

RE: Wiki about 'Blacks' and myself.
Thanks for your comments. To be honest I haven't actually read the entire page yet, I was actually just browsing fairly random pages and came across the 'Blacks' page and decided to see what people were arguing over. I'll certainly give it a full look when I have some free time soon, but at the moment the only reason I responded was because I happened to see the bit about IQ and race and instantly alarm bells went off because I've seen IQ and race mentioned too many times before by racists to justify prejudice. Once I've had a look at the entire page I'll certainly help you if I feel I should, but I've never actually done any Wiki-ing before! You seem quite a pro...

I'm no pro, as the wonderful thing about Misplaced Pages is that practically anyone can make changes easily and quickly, hence the name (wiki wiki means "quick" in Hawaiian). I too am concerned about the expansion/lack of declination of racism, and I for one will not tollerate it, especially on a site devoted to being an encylopedia. Reply to comments on my article count estimates
Thanks for reading the study I did. I think in order to get the counts of each article, all you need to do is multiply the percentage by 5. I did 500 random searches, and turned it into a percent. Each should work out to be an integer. At least I think that's what I did. I probably have the results written down somewhere in any case. If you could help me with the margin of error or anythign that would be great. I keep meaning to put a request on the mathematicians board or whatever they have, but I keep forgetting. Another user was interested in copying it for a project, and I told him I would let him once I cleaned it up, but haven't got around to it yet.
As for the fancruft issue, well, that's something I may address in a separate study, as I mentioned. I'm curious as to how many articles are "fancrufty", but unlike stubs, rambot articles, dismabigs and the like, they are not so easy to define (even defining stubs can be tricky). I was thinking of categorizing fiction and non-fiction, but I don't think it would be quite fair to put Martin Chuzzlewitt and Ponda Baba in the same category, though they both are fiction. I doubt I'll get around to such a study anytime soon, anyway. -R. fiend 02:02, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
Fair Use images
Your user and talk page spaces contain an image that is tagged as Fair Use. I always hate to be the bearer of bad news on this stuff, but as per copyright (legal) issues on this, we are not allowed to have images classified as fair use on pages not related to the subject, especially on the user space. If you could remove the image (or create a mock up, using legos, or clay, or something), that would be most excellent. Again, I'm sorry I had to do this (I had to remove Image:Cowbell2.jpg), but I'm trying to create a greater encyclopedia. Thanks a lot, ] 03:30, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
- I think this is an example of m:copyright paranoia, which image(s) are we talkin about? --Cool Cat 09:13, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
- Perhaps, but the image I am refering to is Image:Theweakestlinkwho.jpg, on both your talk and user page. It could very well be that I'm paranoid, but I'd just like to make sure there's no infringements. It is not considered fair use to have pictures of unrelated content on a user space. I personally would prefer to be able to use the pictures, but under Fair Use law, we're not allowed. If you want to bring this up with one of the experts at Image Tagging or somewhere, I'm sure that'd be fine. Happy editing, ] 19:59, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
- I can remove it with a heavy heart but I really am not sure whose copyrights we are violating? Dr.Who? Weakest link? BBC? --Cool Cat 20:54, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
- Actualy I don't need to bother you with it. Ill remove the image and link to the image instead. It was hard to see anyways. --Cool Cat 21:24, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
- Arright, thanks. See my talk page for more on my copyvio issues about Image:Cowbell2.jpg. I ended up linking to the image. Thanks again, and sorry for the paranoia, -] 21:53, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
- Nonsense you did your job (I think) ;) --Cool Cat 22:00, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the welcome
Thanks for the nice message I recieved when joining Misplaced Pages.
Also, I added the {{cleanup}} to the Boilerplate text page because there are five "See Also" sections and the entire page looks like a total mess. Ironchef8000
- No problem, but please propose changes to articles (especially in the article namespace) in their respective talk page. Thanks and welcome, ] 23:15, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
