DeKalb High School is a public four-year high school located in De Kalb, Illinois, in the United States. It is part of DeKalb School District 428.

Population

The school currently has 1,694 students enrolled.

History

DeKalb High School dates its founding to the early 1900s. DHS is currently very full of students, and that has created a problem for students in the hallways. It has been decided a new high school will be built, opening for the 2011-2012 school year. The current campus will be given to Huntley Middle School.

Academics

In 2006, DeKalb had an average composite ACT score of 20.6 and graduated 90.6% of its senior class. DeKalb has not made Adequate Yearly Progress on the Prairie State Achievements Examination, a state test part of the No Child Left Behind Act. It is up to the class of 2010 to keep this school out of Government Control. Despite these scores, there is a large amount of tutoring available to the students of DeKalb High School. There is a math lab that is open during school hours, as well as before and after school. Science Tutoring is offered three days a week after school, and foreign language tutoring is offered every Wednesday after classes.

Athletics

DeKalb's 22 athletic teams are known as the Barbs. This name comes from the fact that barbed wire was invented in DeKalb County. Its nine boys teams and thirteen girls teams now compete in the Western Sun Conference—which was just formed in 2006—as well as in the Illinois High School Association.

On February 7, of 2009 the DeKalb Illinois High School Basketball team proved worthy of a newspaper article that had nothing to do with winning. Playing against Milwaukee Madison High School, DeKalb would go on to purposely miss two free shots in a demonstration of incredible team sportsmanship. Just hours before this game began, Madison's senior Captain, Johntel Franklin, learned of his beloved mother's untimely death. To deal with his grief, this young teenage basketball player not only came to the game but he asked his coach to let him play. His coach hugged him and informed the refs he was sending in Franklin. Sending in a player not on the roster would mean an automatic technical and two free throws for the opposing team. So, DeKalb's Coach, Dave Rohlman, sent in Darius McNeal who volunteered to take the free throws. McNeal intentionally missed those two shots, rolling the basketball out of bounds twice. Once the Madison team and the Madison fans realized what DeKalb did in support of their grieving senior captain they stood in applause.

Coach Jeff Davis of the DeKalb High School Girls Varsity Softball Team, DeKalb IL, cuts one of the top Div 1 potential athletes this season. Sage Gutierrez, an upcoming softball player at Dekalb High School is cut under bizarre circumstances. Coach Davis stated the athlete “does not have enough talent to be on his team.” This is a player who was the number 1 player for the freshman team in 2006-2007. In fact, she made the varsity team that year only to be turned away because her family had just moved into the area and there were legal complications. Coach Davis fought for her then, but there was nothing he could do. Sage won MVP her freshman year and looked forwarded to playing varsity. Sage’s sophomore year, she again makes varsity only to be told that there were juniors and seniors who would not get to play if she was on the team. Coach Davis again fights to keep her, but she was denied the right to play varsity and was told to go play for the sophomore team. Sage accepted the decision and was again voted MVP and also was voted the "Offensive Player of the Year" for Dekalb High School Girls Sophomore Softball Team for 2007-2008. Under her own initiative, Sage went to the renowned University of Michigan Hitters Softball Camp in the summer of 2008. Camp Director, Jennifer Brundage, Assistant Softball Coach for the university, was extremely impressed with Sages skills. Now she “does not have enough talent” Coach Jeff Davis is looking for? Something is amiss at DeKalb High School. There are four sophomore players this year, but none of them will be denied the chance to play for a junior? Hmmm, what goes on one year is not the same the next? Athletic Director/Assistant Principal Dan Jones, after numerous phone calls, is standing behind his coach. It is unfortunate that a potential Division 1 athlete is left off a team that in the end, will find out they could have used her. Losing in the Regional Championships last year due to shaky pitching and a real lack of offensive power, this writer believes DeKalb High School Girls Varsity Softball Team will find themselves in the lower half of the realm this year.

Music

• In 2008 the DHS Jazz Ensemble was named a finalist in the prestigious Essentially Ellington band competition, one of only 15 bands from all of North America to receive such honors.

• The DeKalb High School Guys' A Cappella group, Fly Check, won the ICHSA midwest regional championship in 2007 and 2008, and they attended nationals in New York City both years. They are one of 4 groups to be selected from the entire nation.
