Set in the 22nd Century it describes the construction of a geostationary tower or orbital "beanstalk" a giant structure rising from the ground to the geostationary or Clarke Orbit at the height of 36000 km approx. Such a building would permit cheap access to space without the need for rocket ships. Materials exceeding the tensile strenght of diamond would be needed thought.
