Manuel Zelaya was deposed on 28 June 2009 and the National Congress swore-in Micheletti. Both dispute the presidency.

Roberto Micheletti Bain (born 13 August 1943) is the acting President of Honduras. Micheletti, a son of immigrants from Bergamo province in Lombardy, Italy, is a member of the Liberal Party of Honduras and the owner of Spanish social network Cielo.com. He has been named president by the National Congress of Honduras during the 2009 Honduran political crisis and military arrest of president Manuel Zelaya concerning the Honduran constitutional referendum, 2009. In 2008 he sought his party's nomination to run for president in the November 2009 election, but was defeated by Vice President Elvin Ernesto Santos.

International support for the Micheletti government remains scant; few countries have recognized him as the president of Honduras. On July 1, 2009, the Honduran daily El Heraldo, in an online news feed Crisis in Honduras: Minute by Minute, reported that Taiwan and Israel had recognized the Micheletti government through their embassies. The Organization of American States (OAS) says it will not recognize any government other than that of the elected president, Manuel Zelaya, and US President Barack Obama has also condemned the events.

With President Zelaya absent following his arrest and forced exile in the early hours of 28 June 2009, the Constitution mandated that the head of Congress, Roberto Micheletti, act as provisional head of state as Vice-President Elvin Ernesto Santos had resigned in December 2008. Micheletti was sworn in by the National Congress on a show of hands on Sunday afternoon 28 June for a term that ends on 27 January 2010. Official reactions from many international leaders are condemning the ouster of President Zelaya, many of them calling for his reinstatement, with Venezuela president Hugo Chávez stating that he is putting his nation's armed forces on alert, and vowing to invade Honduras if Michelletti is sworn as President Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).. The United States rejected the overthrow of Zelaya in statements by U.S. Ambassador to Honduras Hugo Llorens, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and U.S. President Barack Obama. The European Union and the Organization of American States have also condemned the ouster of president Zelaya.

He had been the President (speaker) of the National Congress of Honduras since January 2006. Although in the same Liberal Party of Honduras as Zelaya, there had been conflict between the two politicians before the military, judicial, and National Congress action against Zelaya.
