As such, in a literal sense it would include any object in the air of which the nature is not known, but usually when the term 'UFO' is used, it refers to some of the unidentified objects which are actually spaceships of extraterrestrial aliens.
The field of UFOs should not be confused or intermingled with "the paranormal". It is a discreet, self contained discipline, which should be and has been approached with the same rigor that other scientific disciplines are subject to.
Contrary to the opinions of people who have not been exposed to the evidence and logical arguments related to UFOs, this subject has nothing to do with belief, or faith any more than one of the well established fields of Physics has to do with belief. It is a subject of hard facts and logical inquiry, as Quantum theory is.
The arguments over this subject often take on a ferocity normally seen in religous conflicts, such is the strength of feeling between the opposing camps.
In recent history, the main opposing camp, absolutely rejecting the possibility that some UFOs are the spacecraft of extraterrestrials, is "Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal" http://www.csicop.org/
The subject of UFOs is important not only for its examination of the activities of extraterrestrials, but also because it forces a cold analysis of the preconceptions and hierarchies of human society, which disfavour dissent, balance and objectivity.
