In 1944 Romania was occupied by soviet troops, who would not withdraw until 1958. In the meantime, part of the country has been detached to form the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. The latter proclaimed independence in 1991, under the name of Republic of Moldova but Russian (ex-Soviet) forces remain in the republic, playing a key role in the Transnistrian conflict.
